    1. Developing Leadership/Management Skills Integration/Review of First Part of NSDM Course

    2. First Course Framework “..build on the personal, interpersonal, and group management skills you have developed to this point in your career. These enhanced managerial and leadership skills will be used to address how to implement change, overcome resistance to change, and design organizations that are receptive to change.” (Syllabus)

    3. 10 Leadership/Management Skills General Relevance Research shows that the most successful leaders and managers demonstrate Technical/functional knowledge, and The softer people skills we focus on in the first part of the NSDM course The 10 skills are therefore predictors of success, given the requisite technical/functional knowledge developing self-awareness, managing personal stress, solving problems, building relationships by communicating supportively, gaining power & influence, motivating others, managing conflict, empowering & delegating, building effective teams & teamwork, and leading positive change.

    4. Two Pronged Management Model Since the skills are learnable, it makes sense to strive to develop them/continually improve them The two pronged model shows how one can develop the skills and functional/technical knowledge needed to be a successful leader/manager

    5. Practical Application The National Security Decision Making course is an opportunity to work on the lower part of this two pronged model. During Sessions 2 thru 11, you read about and do some exercises that can help you assess your need for further development in 10 management skills that are predictors of success. The outcome of this first part of the course should be a concrete plan to prioritize and develop the leadership/management skills.

    6. Establishing Priorities Some may say one should work on all the management skills. However, in reality we all have a limited amount of time/energy and lots of competing requirements for that time/energy Priority for development can be determined by the relevance/importance of each skill in your future, and your current level of demonstration of the skills

    7. Method for Establishing Priorities One way to choose your priorities is first assess the relative strength and weaknesses of your current level of demonstration of the skills. For example, you could look at your assessment results, and how they compare with other people. From this data you can determine your current level that way (see the 2nd and 3rd column in the table on the next slide)

    9. Method for Establishing Priorities (continued) Another factor to take into account is how relevant or important the skills will be to you in the future. You don’t want to spin your wheels getting good at something that is not of great importance on your job, while there are more relevant skills that need to be applied in the environment you plan to be in during the coming years. (See the 4th column in the table). Taking into account your current skill level, and the importance of each skill in your career, you can make a judgment on the priority for the development of each skill (the last column in the table).
