Pros & Cons – Terminal Server Connection • Pros • Easy to maintain – single program install all users • May be able to use existing Surgery server • Little need to update workstations • Cons • Cost (Windows licencing) • High learning curve • Some ancillary software doesn’t work on TS (Eg MS Office needs to be licenced separately and retail versions don’t install)

  4. Pros & Cons – Remote Desktop to normal Windows workstation • Pros • No extra cost • Cons • Ties up a workstation at the surgery • Printing problems are common • Speed may not be optimal

  5. Pros & Cons – VPN • Pros • Additional layer of Security • Printing is possible • Cons • Speed – especially on limited bandwidth connections • Set-up is fairly technical, and therefore may be costly • Time taken to connect • May require additional hardware

  6. Pros & Cons – VNC • Pros • Free • Can access the ‘console’ of a server • Open Source • Cons • Requires some technical skill • Speed isn’t optimal, and can be an issue • NO PRINTERS • Has been hacked in the past (EvilVNC) • Limited development

Pros and Cons – • Pros • Can access console of server • iPhone, iPad, and Android app • Cross platform (including Linux) • Unattended Access • Great Security • Some printer support • Development is occurring • Cons • Free only for private use • Commercial Version licencing is expensive • Limited support options

Pro Tips and Tricks • Talk to your Computer Tech about what is already in use and what they recommend and use • Think about how technically enabled users are • Consider setup time when considering costs • iPods via Wi-Fi may not work within the surgery – depending on the Wi-Fi infrastructure • Consider how crucial printing remotely is
