The Problem Amy and up to 5 friends want to go to the Zoo. If it costs $5.00 to get in, and each girl has $25 to spend on souvenirs, how much will they spend if she brings 1,2,3,4, and 5 friends? Remember to include Amy!
The Equation This is one of the possible equations if f= number of friends, and c= cost of trip. C= f(30)+30 What are the independent and dependent variables in the equation? Is this a function? Why or why not?
Independent and Dependent I= The number of friends Amy brings D= The cost of the trip Yes, this is a function The X-values do not repeat. Domain= The list of X-values in a function. Range= The list of Y-values in a function.
Domain and Range D=(1,2,3,4,5) R=(60,90,120,150,210) Is this continuous or discrete? Why or why not?
Continuous or Dicscrete? This is a discrete function because it has a fixed number of x values, so the line couldn’t go on.
Function Notation Remember, the equation is C= f(30)+30 So, function notation would be f(x)= x(30)+30
The Results So, if Amy brings 1 friend, it will cost 60 dollars total. If she brings 2 friends, it will cost 90 dollars total. So on and so forth.
