  3. Make Every Wall A Firewall

  4. A Revolution in Paint… Contego is Latin for “To shield, to guard, or to protect.” • Contego’s Passive Fire Barrier (PFB) primer/finish is one of the most powerful, important technologies ever developed. • Familiar latex base that anyone can easily apply. • Extremely economical. • Bonds to almost any kind of substrate. • Requires no special preparation. • Thoroughly tested and certified. • Makes treated structures virtually impervious to fire. • Non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, non-dermatic. • Meet or exceed tough code requirements while saving both time and money.

  5. What is it? • When exposed to high heat or fire, Contego’s Passive Fire Barrier thin film primer/finish swells or “intumesces” forming a tough char barrier that stops the fire by blocking access to the fuel it needs to grow. • It’s simple - no fuel, no fire. • Water-based Contego PFB applies like any normal latex paint. • Cleans up easily with soap and water. • Contego PFB bonds tightly to virtually any substrate thanks to advanced polymers. • It’s like any normal latex primer, apply any color, type or brand of paint as a topcoat or tint and use as a finish coat without need to topcoat. • Thin film means less weight and space than with other barriers. Two coats of Contego Intumescent primer offers solid protection When exposed to fire Contego “Intumesces” providing a char barrier The char barrier reflects heats and protects the underlying substrate When the fire is extinguished simply scrape away the char barrier

  6. How is it applied? There is no special training necessary to apply Contego’s PFB thin film intumescent latex. Anyone who can paint a wall can also easily fireproof it at the same time. You don’t need special equipment. Any type of airless sprayer, brush, roller or mitt will do. Forget special preparation costs! As long as the substrate is clean, dry, and oil-free, Contego’s advanced polymers will bond. Fire protection aside, this is great paint!

  7. Applications? Contego protects almost any type of building material or substrate: • Structural Steel. • Framing, studs, joists, and stringers. • Drywall. • OSB and Manufactured Wood. • SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) • Turn hollow-core and solid doors into fire-resistant doors. • Oil rigs and Maritime applications. • Automotive and aircraft. • And…

  8. Special Applications: Spray Polyurethane Foam • ASTM E-84 Class A Certified Note: Contego extended this important test from the normal 10 minutes to 25 minutes! • UBC 26.3 – CORNER Room Burn for Thermoplastic Systems. • In the video on the right - The American Institute of Toxicology (AIT Labs) burned two identical polyurethane foam specimens in their lab. The Specimen on the top was painted with 2 coats (14 mil.) of Contego PFB Latex and the bottom specimen was untreated. • See for yourself how Contego PFB protects even flammable polyurethane foam from ignition. • The untreated specimen was consumed in less than 5 minutes. The smoke produced overwhelmed the commercial grade fume hood with black smoke. • The treated specimen showed no sign of ignition after 15:30 minutes when the test was terminated. As you can see, there was minimal smoke production and the structural integrity of the test sample was substantially unaffected. “The treated specimen demonstrated no apparent reaction to the flame and produced no observable amount of smoke.” --AIT Laboratory

  9. Special Applications: AluminumContego vs. 250,000 BTUs A 1/8” sheet of aluminum protected by three coats of Contego PFB Thin Film Intumescent becomes virtually indestructible. Thermocouple 6 was located on the exposed side of the test sheet rising to a temperature of 1800 + degrees. Thermocouples 2,3, and 4 were on the back of the sheet indicating a maximum temp. of 350 degrees. The test was terminated after 2 hours and 15 minutes. However, note that the temperature curve flattened within the first twenty minutes indicating the test could have gone indefinitely. That’s the power of Contego. See the next page to see what happens to an untreated specimen exposed to the same intense heat.

  10. Special Applications:AluminumContego vs. 250,000 BTUs A 1/8” sheet of aluminum with no Contego protection. The control sample was destroyed after 18 minutes as it began to melt under the intense heat.

  11. Use Contego for any interior application that needs a thin film and dependable fire protection: • HSS columns • Trusses • Structural Steel Beams • Exposed Steel in Atriums • Fire Escape Stairways • Manufacturing Facilities

  12. Contego Announces Updated test results on ¼” steel plate. (BROWSE THE “STEEL DATA” SUBDIRECTORY ON THIS CD) • On April 7, 2003, Contego International tested it’s Thin Film Intumescent on ¼” steel plate. The results were most impressive. • Fully exposed thermocouples last 76 minutes in UL-263/ASTM E119 test. • TC’s on the back side survived 127 minutes. • The average of all four TC’s went 85 minutes before reaching 1,000oF. • All of this with an incredibly thin 73 mils of coating. • Nothing matches Contego’s level of protection with such a thin coat. • Compare with other coatings at five times the required thickness.

  13. Contego Thin Film Fire Barrier Latex goes on thin and shows off the detail of the steel – A smooth, aesthetic finish that can be used as a finish coat, or top coated with any brand alkyd, latex, or acrylic you choose.

  14. As shown by this cut-away section – Contego’s thin coat means heavy duty protection and an economical way to meet or exceed fire code requirements on steel.

  15. Contego Tested on Steel Plate by Clariant’s Laboratories in Knapsack, Germany • On March 28, 2003, Clariant Corporation, the global leader in fire protection technology conducted a DIN 1402, Part 8 test on Contego International’s Thin Film Intumescent on steel plate to verify it’s performance. The results: • 75 minutes duration using only 39 mils! • 95 minutes at 58 mils! • The DIN 1402, Part 8 uses a hotter furnace temperature and lower fail temperature than the ASTM-119 or UL-263. Contego’s performance matched other test results, proving that Contego Thin Film Intumescent Fire Barrier Latex now represents the state-of-the-art in thin film protection. • The test results can be found on the “Steel Data” subdirectory on this CD.

  16. Check out our UL-263 (ASTM-E119) on a W10x49. A remarkably thin coat (less than 2 mm) provides 90 minutes of protection. Read the entire report in the “Steel Data” subdirectory on this CD-ROM and visit our web site regularly to see new test results as they happen.

  17. If meeting fire code is the problem, Contego is the answer. • Outstanding performance in an ultra thin film coat. • Backed by up to date laboratory test results. • The lowest possible cost per square foot to meet fire code. • The easiest application ever offered in an intumescent. • Excellent dry-fall characteristics. • Bonds to anything, can be top coated easily and reliably. • Has a pleasant smell and is completely nontoxic. • Finally, the performance you need & the look you want. • Quick, easy clean-up using soap and water.

  18. The Problem: 1. Fire doubles every 60 seconds. 2. Over 2 million fires are reported to fire departments each year in the USA. 3. New York City alone has more fires each year than Japan. 4. Over $10,000,000,000 in property damage in the USA each year from fire. 5. Despite the use of sprinklers and smoke alarms, the USA has the worst fire fatality rate in the industrialized world. 6. Fires kill more Americans than floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes combined. 7. In deadly home fires 14% had working smoke detectors and alarms. 8. Smoke detectors failed to operate in 44% of reported fires. 9. You have no sense of smell when sleeping. 10. Almost 40% of fire victims die in their sleep.

  19. TheSolution: • A unique line of fire protective coatings for residential and commercial applications designed to: • save lives • prevent injury • minimize property loss

  20. Chosen as one of the most innovative, important products architecture & construction for 2002. Contego management meets with Hanley Wood Publishing to receive this prestigious award, which was based on popular response. Contego was the only paint or coatings company even nominated. Check our web site for additional stories about Contego’s cutting-edge technology and how it is changing the world of architecture and construction…

  21. Seeing isBelieving: The Challenge: Protecting a 120 year old farmhouse from burning was not a challenge for Contego. The Contego team dry walled and treated the living room. Then, with the cooperation of the Noblesville Fire Department, we tried to burn it to the ground. They began by placing an upholstered recliner in the corner, covering it with combustibles like straw and drapery material. Then they lit it and allowed it to burn for several minutes…this would normally cause a catastrophic whole house fire. Results: A slight charring of the walls where the power of Contego PFB intumesced to protect the substrate and save the house from burning. “Structures protected by your products seem invulnerable to fire. The use of your products will clearly reduce deadly smoke production and give firefighters additional time to react to fires once reported.” --James Risk, Executive Director, Fire and Safety Management

  22. Whole House Protection: Versatility: Contego can be used on the exterior of structures as well as the interior. Although designed for interior use, its wearability allows it to be used on the exterior of structures providing a topcoat is applied. Contego applied two coats of its thin film intumescent latex to this 120 year-old farmhouse. Note that the windows on the treated section of the house stay in tact during the entire burn, indicating much cooler temperatures inside, even though the rest of the house is engulfed in flames. Survivability: Fire doubles every 60 seconds in a non-treated structure. Contego adds time… To escape For firemen to respond To save lives and minimize property damage “Now that you know that you can, why wouldn’t you? If you’re going to paint, why not protect too?.”

  23. Bottom Line:Protection & Profits No matter what size the job. No matter what type of job. The cost to “Contego it” compared to the protection achieved is minimal. For combustible materials like wood, OSB, plywood, drywall, and spray polyurethane foam, the cost is impressively low. For structural steel applications, the savings are even greater. Since Contego can be applied by any qualified commercial paint contractor and requires no special equipment, the applied cost per square foot is significantly lower. Equally important, Contego has excellent dry fall characteristics, an extremely tough bond to primed steel, a pleasant scent, zero toxicity, and all of the other advantages described in this presentation. Once you try Contego, everything else is old news. The only increased cost to a project is the difference between the retail price of Contego vs. normal primer…labor is the same, preparation is the same, cleanup is the same. (Pricing is based on Level 1 Contractor pricing. Ask about volume discounts.)

  24. Pricing • Product is available in 5-gallon units. • Prices are FOB Buffalo, NY or Chicago, IL. • Terms are prepaid by credit card, wire transfer, certified funds, or company check.

  25. Contego PFB Details: • Shelf Life: Indefinite (protect from freezing) • Application rate per coat is 130 Square feet per gallon. (7mil.dry/12mil. wet) • Two coats recommended for most applications. • (Structural Steel requires 55 to 75 mils, so plan on 12 – 15 sq. ft./gallon) • Recommended application: positive displacement piston sprayer • (Recommended application pressure = 1,200 - 2,500 psi/ nozzle size 25) • Other application methods: Brush, roller, or mitt. • Steel should be primed with high quality primer such as red oxide. • Allow each coat to dry to touch and five days for full cure. • Top coat with acrylic, alkyd, enamel or latex paint to add color or sheen. • Clean up with soap and water. • The 106 bright white matte finish can be used as a final coat for ceilings. • Contego may also be tinted up to 10% for light pastel shades.

  26. Consumer Acceptance?Virtually 100% Focus group and mall intercept testing has proven conclusively thatconsumers want the passive protection of Contego Passive Fire Barrier in their homes.

  27. Making a Difference… Fires cost more than 10 billion dollars annually. But more importantly, tens of thousands are seriously injured from burns and smoke inhalation. Dozens of lives are lost every single day when loved ones are trapped in burning buildings. Now you can do something!
