INVISILIGHTER Discussion Ed Rightor April 24, 2019
Market Research: What’s the opening? Understand: • Competitive Offerings • Unmet needs • Specifically, what unique needs will your offering provide? • What’s the value proposition that’s different? • Requirements • What are the performance requirements that frame your offering? (totally invisible after XX hours, doesn’t wrinkle paper, no yellowing, nonhazardous…)
Literature: What dyes are applicable, available, that meet requirements? • Natural dyes • Synthetic, non hazardous • Color • Solubility • Persistence • Market Availability • Cost…
Color wheel: Where do you want your dye to transmit/ reflect (wavelength)? Primary Colors: Red, yellow and blueIn traditional color theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3 pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues
If it transmits/reflects in one color, what other colors are absorbed? • A solid object has color depending on the light it reflects. If it absorbs light in the red and yellow region of the spectrum, it will have a blue color • Chlorophyll, the pigment that makes plants green, absorbs light in the red end of the spectrum and light in the blue end of the spectrum. A green leaf is green to us because the middle band of visible light is not absorbed and is instead reflected into our eyes
How do you find what dyes are available? • Commercial vendors (natural, synthetic dyes) • Reference books on dyes General Introduction to the Chemistry of Dyes
Once you have color(s) candidates what mechanisms can be used to induce fade? • Oxygenation • UV degradation • Moisture (hydrolysis) • Antioxidant depletion • Reactive dyes • Others
