  1. The Sun • The sun is comprised of several layers • The center or core of the Sun is where nuclear fusion of Hydrogen occurs creating new atoms of Helium • The Sun has about 5 billion years of Hydrogen left

  2. The Sun • The Sun’s atmosphere is made up of 3 layers • The Photosphere is the inner most layer of the Sun’s atmosphere. When we look at a picture of the sun this is the layer we see • The Chromosphereis the middle layer of the Sun’s atmosphere we see this layer during a solar eclipse. It is blocked out by the photosphere when we see the sun

  3. The Sun • The Corona Is the outermost Layer of the Sun. It is visible only when the sun has been eclipsed by the moon it is a white halo of light around the sun

  4. The Sun • The Sun has features on it that we can view from Earth • Sunspots appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun because they are cooler pockets of gas and don’t give off as much energy • Sunspots occur in regular 11 year cycles. • Sunspots occur in pairs or as groups

  5. The Sun • Prominences link different groups of sunspots together. • They can appear as large loops and have temperatures about 10,000 degrees Celsius

  6. The Sun • Solar flares when the prominences link together they can heat up to millions of degrees causing an explosion of gas to be ejected off the Sun and into space. • This large release of magnetic energy can interact with Earth creating blackouts of power grids and damage to satellites

  7. The Moon • The moon plays an important part in the survival and evolution of life on our planet. • The moon keeps our tilt stable at 23.5 degrees • The moon influences our tides by it’s gravitational pull on the oceans There are 1 high tide and 1 low tide every 12.5 hours • The moon was created from a large impact with another body the size of mars

  8. The Moon • The moon always has one side that we see. • The moon goes through phases. Lasting about 29.5 days • In order these are The New moon, The waxing crescent, the waxing quarter, the waxing gibbous, the full moon, the waning gibbous, the waning quarter, the waning crescent
