  4. ADVENTURE ED. TERMS CULTURE NORM Norms are what is generally accepted by the group. They are ever changing and can be altered by any individual in the group with the permission of or lack of opposition by a majority of the group. • The culture is a set of common and shared values, beliefs,intentions, and behaviors among its members.

  5. PERSONAL AWARENESS • Personal awareness is the understanding of ones’ role as “part of the whole” and how we are connected to all that surrounds us.

  6. GROUP AWARENESS Group Awareness is the understanding of ones importance to the group and how their actions (positive or negative) will impact the group as a whole. It is also understanding that everyone is important. (we’re not done until we all finish)

  7. OBSTACLES TO SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS FEAR LACK OF DISCIPLINE LACK OF SELF WORTH AND RESPECT FAILURE TO VALUE OTHERS

  8. DON’T BE AFRAID!We all fear something and we mask it in a number of ways. Don’t let that fear be an obstacle in this class. You are your biggest roadblock. Ever heard some of these: What we don’t understand we fear. What we fear we destroy. • This is soooo lame • Boooooring!! • This is stupid • What a waste of time • They are losers • I don’t care • Etc. etc.etc…….. People diminish and pull away from experiences that make them uncomfortable or afraid.

  9. Discipline – finding value in everything we choose to do. You will spend 50 minutes of your life (which you will never ever get back) in this class each school day. What will you get for that investment. WHAT WILL THE RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT BE

  10. Self worth and self respect determine how you present yourself and how you treat others. When you like yourself you are more tolerant of others. When you don’t like yourself you are less likely to like or accept others.

  11. FAILURE TO VALUE OTHERS • Don’t fall into the “VELVET ROPE” syndrome Should we exclude others based on our value meter.

  12. ADVENTURE EDUCATION VALUE PRINCIPLES THESE ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A SUCESSFUL EXPERIENCE in Adv. Ed. • Openness to multiple solutions. • Respect and value of self and others. • Honest and open feedback • Creation of an environment that is physically and mentally safe. • Work toward individual and group goals. • Stretch self- imposed boundaries. • View conflict as an opportunity to learn and grow. • Understand and incorporate the concept of Failing Forward. • Work from the assumption that everyone is competent. • Understand the limits to our potential are self -imposed. • Tolerance and patience for self and others. • Abundance mentality- there is always enough. • Discipline – finding value in everything we choose to do. • Empowerment- we create our own reality. We are a catalyst or recipient of all that surrounds us. • Judgment of others is in some way a judgment of ourselves, partly or in whole. • Collective consciousness. • Everyone has innate leadership potential. • Everyone is trust worthy. • Cooperation over competition

I choose to create and participate in a group that is physically and emotionally safe.  • 2.     I choose to work toward achieving individual and group goals. • 3.     I choose to value myself and others. I choose to agree that devaluing others and put downs do not have a place in our classroom. • 4.     I choose to attempt to move beyond my comfort zone, in an attempt to promote self growth. • 5.     I choose to be honest with my perceptions, and to be willing to give and receive honest and open feedback. • 6.     I choose that conflict resolution be a priority, and to look at conflict as an opportunity to learn and to grow. • 7.     I choose to be open to the idea of multiple solutions.

  17. IN CLOSING THIS IS YOUR ONLY LIFE AND YOU SHOULD SPEND IT WISELY. LIVE-LEARN-LOVE-LAUGH The Secret of Life The secret of life is not a process of discovery but rather a process of CREATION. We create our own circles. One does not discover himself. He re-creates himself a new. What do you want to create for yourself? • Doing vs Being / Proving vs Expressing • The evolved individual EXPRESSES his /her gifts and acknowledges the gifts of others. • The un-evolved individual tries to PROVE his/her worthiness by defeating or devaluing the worth of others. • Leaders “Be” and “Express” “ Do not confuse who you are with the role you play.” • Leadership • Leaders add value to each individual, setting and lesson. • Leaders bring their true purpose to a conscious level. • Leaders are disciplined. Discipline= finding value in everything you do. • Leaders find ways to connect with all members of the circle. • Leaders pull not push. When one PULLS he has already been there.
