The Adani Group To Commence Operations On The Second And Third Phases Of The Vizhinjam Project: The second and third phases of the Vizhinjam Port have recently received a nod as the Kerala Coastal Zone Management Authority (KCZMA) which functions under the Department of Environment and Climate Change recommended the centre to approve the environment and CRZ clearance for the port expansion. After the KCZMA gave its recommendations to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) at the end of last month, the Vizhinjam International Port applied on the centre’s portal on January 4th. The next step is the hearing by the MoEF’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC). This is going to take place in New Delhi. The Vizhinjam Port is expected to receive environmental clearance within the upcoming months post which the various works on the second and third phases of the project will commence. With its completion, the Adani Group will be able to give excellent exposure to its port business. It will no longer have to deal with the baseless allegations of Adani Bribery Scandal which have been ongoing for quite a while now.
Why Begin Work On The Second And Third Phases Of The Vizhinjam Project? The second and third phases of the port are extremely crucial, owing to the success of the first phase of the project. The first step of the expansion will be the extension of the 2,900m breakwater southwards. The public hearing for the environmental clearance for the first and second phases was conducted on 19 June 2024. Since then, significant progress has been made in the proceedings for acquiring the clearance for the next phases. The KCZMA officials have already visited the project spot. They have also prepared the report and have given the green signal. They have sent the recommendation to the MoEF as well. The port authorities have also uploaded the application on the portal so that the clearance can be received soon. The EAC hearing will take place soon. It is expected that within 2 months of the hearing, the port will receive the centre’s clearance.
The Commencement Of Operations At The Vizhinjam Port: The Vizhinjam Port has been operational since 4th December 2024. Currently, 2 to 3 ships are docking at the international port daily which is making it congested. Also, there is a huge demand for more ships to berth at the port. So, it has become inevitable to further bring about expansion to the port. The total estimated cost for the second and third phases is INR 9,540 crore. The Adani Group can proceed with the development of the second and third phases of the Vizhinjam port only after they obtain the necessary clearances.
The existing breakwaters will be extended by 1,000m. The trucks have already started bearing the stones at the port site so that the port operations can begin soon. A team of officials from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has already assessed the various impacts of the second and third phases of the port. The state government has also directed the Adani Group to complete the various operations of the second and third phases by 2028.
