Oakland Unified School District: Overview • 124 schools, 47,000 students • 86 district schools, 37,000 students • 38 charter schools, 10,000 students • 38.1% Latino, 30.6% African American, 14.1% Asian, 11.8% white, 2.6% other, 1.3% Pacific Islander, 1.0% Filipino • 71.4% Free or Reduced-Price Lunch • State receivership 2003-2009 • 2011 Strategic Plan: Community Schools, Thriving Students

  4. OUSD Web Map Center Website The OUSD Web Map Center contains an array of maps and apps that support administrative and research initiatives undertaken by the Research, Assessment & Data (RAD) department of the Oakland Unified School District. ousd.maps.arcgis.com

  5. School Finder Map Interactive live web map of all current schools, attendance areas, and city political boundaries (Oakland has 7 electoral districts for purposes of city council and school board elections).

  6. 2010 Opportunity Mapping: Informed Our Strategic Plan OUSD's Opportunity Mapping project shows where conditions exist that tend to produce positive outcomes for kids, and where opportunity is lacking and the challenges for students are greater. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is used to map the distribution of school-based and District-wide traditional and non-traditional indicators of student performance and community health. Modeled after the Opportunity Mapping project developed at the Kirwan Institute of The Ohio State University (http://kirwaninstitute.osu.edu)

  7. 2013-2014 Environmental Factors Map: Informed Implementation of New Budget Process Mapping school neighborhood stress factors in support of budgeting for equity via Local Control Funding Formula. • Violent Crime • Fresh Food access • Income • Unemployment • Asthma/Air Quality • Liquor stores • Residential vacancy To realize our vision of a high-quality, full-service community school in every neighborhood, we need to invest in those schools that serve communities of highest need. The Environmental Factors place-based analysis helps to identify those schools and places where such sustained and concentrated investment is needed.

  8. District Medical Services Support Mapping current students with medical conditions requiring treatment; aligned with citywide MediCal enrollment: • Sickle Cell Disease • Controlled medications • Seizures/Diastat • Severe Allergies/Epi Pin • Diabetes

  9. Digital Divide Map: Informs student access to internet/computer The “digital divide” is the inequality between those who can reliably connect to the Internet and computers and those who cannot. In East and West Oakland, it’s estimated that 30% of households fall in this divide, making it more likely these communities are cut off from the tools and resources they need online. Oakland Local, 12/23/13 OUSD surveyed students and parents to determine home access to computers and internet. Access tallied per school, and cross- referenced with Free & Reduced Lunch, Foster Care, English Learners students. (Local Control Funding Formula supplemental and concentration focus groups)

School – Community Partnerships: Implementation of Community Schools Goal District-wide mapping in support of school-community partnerships. • Partnership organization inventory at each school site: • Alignment of partnership service elements with school & community needs, e.g.: • Health & Wellness aligned with students in healthy fitness zone • Academic & Social Emotional Learning aligned with chronic absenteeism

Applying the Data • Environmental factors analysis included in 2014-15 site budgeting formula • Partnerships can now be cultivated based upon community need • Program supports for schools can be assigned according to student and family need • Staff can be assigned according to student needs (e.g., diabetes)
