Message from Kalyan BanerjeeRI President • The Rotary of the Future is a Sustainable Rotary. • Today 1 Rotarian for every 6000 people on this planet. • 10 years ago 1 Rotarian for every 5500 people, and by the year 2025 we are maybe looking at 1 Rotarian for every 7500 people. • Every year we gain 120,000 and every year we loose 120,000 for a net zero or even negative growth. • Only 15% of Rotarians worldwide are women. • Only 11% of Rotarians are less than 40 years. • 68% are over 50 and 39% (of those are) over 60. • Hawaii population 1.36 Million with 1750 Rotarians, that’s 1 Rotarian for every 777 people. A few years ago it was 1 in 600 people

Message from Kalyan BanerjeeRI President • Our Priority is to reduce the average age, that’s why we must show young professionals that Rotary is relevant and right for them, and will enrich their lives. • Rotary has so much to offer. It is up to us to let others know what a fantastic organization we have, and to show people how they can integrate Rotary into their lives. Service does require time, and time is something nobody has enough of these days. So we need to ensure that all the time we spend with Rotary is worthwhile – that it is rewarding and never wasted. • Membership cannot be approached globally, but it is at the club level that Membership is defined by our local cultures, traditions, how we live, connect and communicate.

  10. Why the difference? RANK AND FILE MEMBERS … • Want to do projects • Focus on fund raisers • Social, fun and fellowship • Think Membership chair is responsible • No “how-to” Plan • Membership doesn’t seem important • Rotarians are not “trained” … • … Not equipped to recruit!

  11. How can you help your members understand the importance of Membership? One thing we know … • What happens in Rotary … happens only at the club level !

  12. What is Membership Development? • Recruiting • Orientation • Induction • Extension • Retention

  13. Recruiting “Because membership in Rotary is by invitation only … club members must reach out to friends, business associates, and community members … by asking them to join.” Each One! Reach One!

  14. “Recruitment is both a process and an activity.” • The process involves the preparation to create a welcoming environment. • The activity is the task of askingall people to volunteer. Each One! Reach One!

  15. Reasons for becominga Rotarian • “Wanted to do something useful” • “Thought I would enjoy it” • “Meet new business contacts” • “Make friends” • “Wanted to learn, get experience” • “Explore” Rotary => Retain “Core” But … ?

  16. How to recruit? Just ASK! • Invite someone to be your guest. • Talk about how Rotary …Changes Lives … theirs as well as those we serve. • Introduce the guest to the president and to the very active members of the club. • Follow-up after the meeting and invite them to another meeting or project or maybe a phone call from the president of the club.

  17. How to recruit? Look no further than… • Your Rotaract clubs • Your own families, invite your daughter, son, nephews…. and ask them to bring their friends • Your service providers….ask your doctor whether you can give them a free subscription to the “Rotarian” to display in their waiting room…. • For young members under age 35, create a “Rookie” class, e.g. 50% off dues for first year • Your own community – get your club known for something, e.g. “Green” initiative, recyling, environment”

  18. Equip your members! • Develop a recruiting strategy. • Ask every member to be prepared: • What do you say when asked, “What is Rotary?” • Know 3 or 4 of your clubs projects. • Wear your Rotary pin every day! Share your passion!

  19. CLUB’S KEYS TO MEMBERSHIP GROWTH • Talk about membership at every meeting ... Have a “Weekly Membership Moment” • Support 1 or 2 simple recruitment plans • Involve every member! Everyone is on the “Membership Committee” • Membership growth … happens at the club level … by individual Rotarians. Each One! Reach One!

  20. Pre-Induction Orientation • Overview of Rotary’s history / Your club’s • Rotary’s current focus and goals • Club’s current focus and goals • Commitment –time and attendance • Dues, recognitions and fines • Support of RI Foundation • Written outline or brochures

Induction… Do It Right • Have a plan – develop a tradition • Involve sponsor and membership chair • Be prepared – have materials ready • Use RI induction speech … or draft your own • Members stand, welcome and applaud • New member to speak and outline his/her commitment to the club • Members introduce themselves

Post Induction Orientation(This is an important element of retention) • Develop new member tracking checklist • Provide list of recommended reading • Fireside chats / Seaside chats • Social events with spouses/partners • Use in meetings - Greeter, inspiration, or pledge • Invite new member to Board meeting • Sit at different tables each week • Create a “class” of new members.

  26. 3 Keys to Retaining Rotarians • Appoint new members to committees • Involve them in projects • Consider them for future leadership positions. Involvement and Education

Suggestions for Better Retention • Make a call to every club member that does not show up 3x in a row • If still absent and does not respond, suggest the president/ sponsor to follow up • Get all new members to receive a phone call from the DG or a letter welcoming them to the family of Rotary • In each club visitation by the DG. The DG should allow a few minutes for only the new members and their sponsors • At the club meetings, it will be good if the DG will share the head table (if any) with the new members and their sponsors

  28. Suggestions for Better Retention cont. • Increase Vocational awareness in club meetings • Allow for 10 minutes of professional “talk” • Topics of general interest “infomercial” • Is it beneficial to all concerned • Allow for ads in the weekly newsletter or “ad” space on the website

Characteristicsof a club with low attrition … • A vibrant and active club membership • A good location, food and atmosphere • Fun & fellowship at meetings and events • Interest shown in all members • Meaningful service projects • Thorough orientation & ongoing education … means higher retention!

How to improve communication with your members … • Reality check • Stress, Information overload, busy, too many commitments, too many organizations targeting the same “prospects” • Learn from the News Channels • “broadcast” short, repetitive messages to engage your “audience”, which are your members • Email • Work vs. personal email • Check infrequently
