Grinding wheels are made up of abrasive grains and layers of fiberglass that are bonded together by another material to form a wheel shape. The abrasive grains serve as grinding tools, extracting material from a workpiece so that it can be formed and refined. Grinding wheels come in handy for a variety of grinding and machining tasks.
Characteristics of Grinding Wheels There are five main characteristics of a grinding wheel- material hardness, grain size, wheel grade, grain spacing, and bond type. • Material hardness • The abrasive material of a grinding wheel is based on the hardness of the cutting workpiece material. Super abrasives are special grinding wheels designed with diamond or CBN grains.
Grain size • The size of the abrasive grains in the wheel is determined by a scale of 10 to 600 (finest) coarsest. A larger grain can cut more freely, allowing for quicker cutting but with a poorer surface finish. • Wheel grade • The degree to which the bond retains the abrasive varies from soft to hard. Softer structures range from A to H, relatively hard structures range from I to P, and hard structures range from Q to Z. • Grain spacing • The ratio of bond and abrasive to air space is known as density.
