  3. 3. Why do people like to use a translation dictionary? • Because they need a translation into English (V – E) • Because the translation into their mother tongue is easy to understand (E – V) • Both A & B

Types of nouns: Countable [C] or Uncountable [U] • Types of verbs: Transitive [T] or Intransitive [I] Definition: A transitive verb is one that is used with an object: a noun, phrase, or pronoun but an intransitive verb does not have an object. Ex: She loves animals.=> loveis a transitive verb The baby was crying.=> cryis an intransitive verb

  16. Exercise C: Discourse note In academic writing, topic sentences often consist of a general point. The sentences that follow then support the general statement in various ways, such as: • Giving a definition and/or a description • Giving examples • Giving lists of points (arguments or reasons) • Restating the topic sentence in a different way to help clarify it • Giving more information and detail on the topic sentence to clarify it Often, but not always, the type of sentence is shown by a “discourse marker”, such as for example, first of all. This helps to signal to the reader how the writer sees the link between the sentences and is therefore a good clue as to purpose of the sentences following the topic sentences.

  17. Exercise D: Summarize the text “ICT at work” in a short paragraph (100-150 words) • Read Skills Bank for more information. • Do not copy the sentences in the text, try to plagiarize/ use your own expressions to summarize the text

Homework • Read the text “Changing the way we work” page 19 in the course book and note down topic sentences in each paragraph and then summarize the text in a short paragraph (100-150 words). • Do the handout Part A & B (Activity Bank) • Writing an essay: • Do some research into the use of ICT in the workplace. • Make notes to answer these questions: • How is ICT used in the workplace? • What are the advantages and disadvantages for businesses of using ICT?
