  1. Block 39: Th 1/9 and F 1/10 Nomenclature Warm-up #5 Identify these compounds as ionic or covalent, then name them: ____ (I or C) 1. Na2S ____ (I or C) 2. C2O3 ____ (I or C) 3. SiO2 (also known as glass!) ____ (I or C) 4. CsI ____ (I or C) 5. CaO

  2. Science Fair HELP!! • Every year we need help pulling off the Bowie Science Fair. • Your help would be greatly appreciated. • Take home the handout and return it for a daily grade of 100 (whether or not you help). • Get a late homework pass for bringing in a food, drink or prize donation or recruiting a judge for us—can be used on sapling or daily work. • One per student.

  3. Sapling #15 • Remember Sapling assignments are due on Tuesdays at 11:55 pm. • Your log on is S and your student ID • Your password is just your student ID unless you changed it

  4. Where do the elements come from? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neMEo8ZrwuI

  5. Transition Metals and Roman NumeralsPg4 (notes on your own paper) • Where are the transition metals? • Why do they NEED roman numerals? • Examples: • Lead (II) • Lead (IV) • Fe+1 • Fe+3 • Homework: Page 4 chart

  6. Quiz-Quiz Trade • Take a card, find a partner • Quiz each other, then trade cards • Find a new partner and quiz-quiz-trade Question: Does this element need roman numeral? Yes or No

  7. Polyatomic Ions NotesPg 5 and green STAAR reference sheet • What does “polyatomic ion” mean? • What kind of elements are they composed of? • If they are ions, in which type of compound will they be found? • How are they named? • How are their formulas written?

  8. Polyatomic Ions ListPg 5 • Use the back of your green periodic table to fill in the polyatomic ions list on page 5

  9. Check your list

  10. Naming Compounds with Polyatomic Ions (Page 5) • Naming compounds with polyatomic ions is EASY! • Metal + polyatomic ion • Polyatomic ion + nonmetal-ide • Polyatomic ion + polyatomic ion • These are IONIC, so NO prefixes!

  11. Mad Minute and Homework • Mad Minute • 1 minute to classify the elements as: • Group 1 or 2 metal (m) • Transition metal (tm) • Non-metal (nm) • Polyatomic ion (pa) • Homework: • Nomenclature packet page 4 • Sapling #15 (you should already be done!)—due Tuesday 1/14 at 11:55pm
