  3. The next step is adding a title on the front of your “mission”. • The title will be Missions in Texas. • It should go across the top.

  4. Stop, before you go on make sure you have put the proper heading on the back. • Make sure you write complete heading. • Complete Name • Date • A.M.S. • Class period (Blue or White?)

  5. WHY BUILD THEM?This goes on the left hand side. • SPREAD CRISTIANITY • TEACH SPANISH CUSTOMS TO NATIVE AMERICANS • BUILD NEW SETTLEMENT • BECAUSE OF LA SALLE BUILDING FORT ST. LOUIS IN TEXAS

FIRST MISSIONS IN TEXASWRITE SMALL BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO FIT INFORMATION FOR 6 MISSIONS • Corpus Christi de la Ysleta (1682) (built in West Texas near El Paso) • San Francisco de los Tejas (1690) (First mission in East Texas Failed due to conflict with the Tejas Indians) • Los Adaes (1717) (about 15 miles from French Natchitoches, became capital of Spanish Texas CONTINUED…

  7. MISSIONS CONTINUED… • San Antonio de Valero (1718) (Halfway between Rio Grande and East Texas, called “the Alamo”) • La Bahia (1722) (Built after war with France, became Goliad) • Santa Cruz de San Saba (1757) (meant for Lipan Apaches, destroyed by Comanches and other indians in 1758)

  8. NATIVE AMERICAN LIFE IN MISSIONS (This goes on the left hand side inside the booklet) • Joined for protection and safety • Learned sewing and blacksmithing • Learned farming and ranching • Making products like soap and brick

  9. LIFE OF SPANISH SOLDIER IN THE PRESIDIO (RIGHT SIDE) • GUARD THE MISSION LIVE STOCK • CARRY MESSAGES • PROTECT SUPPLY WAGON TRAINS • KEEP ORDER IN MISSIONS • PROTECT MISSIONS FROM HOSTILE INDIANS • CONTROL INDIANS IN MISSIONS • VERY UNDERPAID

WHY MISSIONS FAILED?(Make sure you leave some space in the bottom.) • Indians didn’t like the control and punishment • Diseases caused deaths • Indians didn’t accept Christianity • Soldiers treated them badly • When floods ruined Indian crops – Indians plotted to kill Spaniards, so Spanish left

  11. LASTING EFFECT OF SPANISH MISSIONS • Spanish name of cities and rivers • Celebration of Holidays • Cattle Ranching in Texas
