NGO “Senior Dom” established and managed by the lady aged 75, former university teacher and member of municipal parliament, … Learned to use PC and Internet 5 years ago, then Established the first “Internet tea-room for the elderly” in SK  The idea already spread to other cities in Slovakia NGO is running courses for the elderly, e.g.: PC, Internet, Photoshop Language courses - English Memory training, … + sport, cultural activities Starting projects Telecare, Senior voluntary workers, … Bottom-up initiative - led by local leader Improved Scenario – Grass root NGO “Senior House”

The elderly: From passive receivers of help to inclusion and active contribution Services: From “established”, traditional (health care, social) services to more “sophisticated” (e.g. training of cognitive, mental skills) Implications/outcomes: Increased quality of life of the elderly Economics impact (voluntary work, flex-work, …) Participation (in democratic processes – e.g. elections) The elderly – vulnerable group during the periods of socio-economic transformations, losing economic & social security, … “Easy target” for political populists (esp. before elections) – “Nobody can give you as much as I can promise to you!” Can have influence on political stability (SK: 1992-1998) Upgrade of the paradigm?

Communication (with family, other elderly, …), building communities  reduce feelings of loneliness, … Access to information – e.g. looking for alternative medicine, searching for good practice, … Access to/delivery of services, new types of services – eLearning, telecare, … (but not yet B2C in SK ) Bundled/integrated services provided by different providers … How can ICT help to the elderly?
