WHAT IS EROSION? EROSION IS THE ACTION OF SURFACE PROCESSES THAT REMOVES SOIL, ROCK, OR DISSOLVED MATERIAL FROM ONE LOCATION ON THE EARTH'S CRUST AND THEN TRANSPORTS IT TO ANOTHER LOCATION WHERE IT IS DEPOSITED. EROSION IS DISTINCT FROM WEATHERING WHICH INVOLVES NO MOVEMENT.
WHAT IS WIND EROSION?
WIND EROSION IS CAUSED BY STRONG WINDS THAT PHYSICALLY MOVE LIGHTER, LESS DENSE SOIL PARTICLES SUCH AS ORGANIC MATTER, CLAY, AND SILT PARTICLES. VERY FINE PARTICLES CAN SIMPLY BE SUSPENDED IN THE AIRSTREAM AND CARRIED LONG DISTANCES. SLIGHTLY LARGER SOIL PARTICLES MAY HOP ALONG THE SURFACE.
WHAT IS GRAVITIONAL EROSION?

WHEN CHUNKS OF STONE FALL FROM A MOUNTAINSIDE TO THE GROUND BELOW, IT IS BECAUSE GRAVITY PULLED THEM DOWN. WHEN A GLACIER MOVES THROUGH A MOUNTAIN RANGE, SLOWLY FLATTENING OR CARVING THE EARTH'S SURFACE IN THAT AREA, IT IS BECAUSE THE PULL OF GRAVITY FORCES THE GLACIER DOWNHILL. WHEN MUDSLIDES OR LANDSLIDES OCCUR, SMOOTHING THE SIDES OF MOUNTAINS OR LARGE HILLS, THE GRAVITY IS AT WORK. EVEN THOUGH GEOLOGISTS RECOGNIZE WATER AND ICE AS THE BIGGEST AGENTS OF EROSION, IT IS THE FORCE OF GRAVITY THAT POWERS THEM BOTH.
WHAT IS GALCIAL EROSION?
GLACIAL EROSION GLACIERS CAN SHAPE LANDSCAPES THROUGH EROSION, OR THE REMOVAL OF ROCK AND SEDIMENT. THEY CAN ERODE BEDROCK BY TWO DIFFERENT PROCESSES: ABRASION: THE ICE AT THE BOTTOM OF A GLACIER IS NOT CLEAN BUT USUALLY HAS BITS OF ROCK, SEDIMENT, AND DEBRIS. IT IS ROUGH, LIKE SANDPAPER.
WHAT IS WATER EROSION
WATER EROSION IS THE REMOVAL AND TRANSPORTATION OF SOIL, SEDIMENT OR MINERAL COMPONENTS OF A ROCK BY A MOVING, LIQUID WATER SOURCE. THIS SOURCE COULD BE A RIVER, STREAM, COASTLINE, RAINFALL, FLOOD, CHANNEL, ETC. WATER EROSION CAN OCCUR AT VERY LOW RATES THAT MAY DISPLACE MATERIALS JUST A FEW CENTIMETERS, OR AT HIGH RATES THAT CAN CAUSE A TOTAL DISPLACEMENT OF MANY KILOMETERS. THE AMOUNT OF LIQUID WATER ACTING AS AN EROSIVE AGENT AND THE STEEPNESS OF THE SURFACE THE MATERIAL IS RESTING ON ARE THE FACTORS THAT WILL DETERMINE THE RATE OF EROSION. THE AMOUNT OF WATER PRESENT DETERMINES THE MASS OF THE EROSIVE AGENT, WHILE THE SLOPE OF THE SURFACE WILL DETERMINE HOW MUCH VELOCITY CAN BE GENERATED. THEREFORE, THESE TWO FACTORS COMBINED CREATE THE CONDITIONS THAT DETERMINE HOW MUCH FORCE THE WATER WILL GENERATE. AS THE AMOUNT OF WATER INVOLVED IN AN EROSIVE EVENT INCREASES, SO WILL THE SIZE OF THE PARTICLES THE WATER IS ABLE TO MOVE. WATER EROSION MAY INVOLVE THE TRANSPORTATION OF ONLY SAND SIZE OR SMALLER GRAINS, OR MAY DISPLACE LARGE BOULDERS OR ENTIRE SHEETS OF ROCK AT ONE TIME.
