Hunters, shooters, wing-shooters, all agree that this passion is best enjoyed under great circumstances, such as finding a good hunting lodge for their purposes since not all are the same. Some are simply sub-standard and offer the hunter little whether that refers to the choice of birds or deer that they are after, or whether the facilities are inadequate and management either not interested enough, or inexperienced. All of these issues can contribute to a great visit to the lodge for the hunter – or not. Some hunters do not mind to visit different regions or states every year; others want to find a good lodge and come back to it since they prefer the known over the unknown. This is, of course, true for the deer hunter and the elk hunter as well. Some hunters have a definite preference: game or birds. Whatever your choice, you want to book a place at a great lodge. A good lodge does not build their profile, their good name and facility overnight. It takes time, it takes years of planning and constant re-evaluating to ensure they do indeed offer the hunter and wing-shooter those opportunities they are after. To achieve results they have to plan ahead: they employ the services of good managers, they may rope in the services of a good biologist that understands animal movements since birds – and deer – will not be controlled. They live and thrive in favourable circumstances where the land and its topography suit them, where they have access to their preferred forage and water, where they able to raise their young and flocks in a habitat they feel comfortable with. All of this takes time and effort and many years’ planning. Once a lodge has these and other applicable systems in place, they are on their way towards becoming an attractive destination for the deer hunter and wing-shooter. For example, pheasant thrive where they find good sources of berries and fruit, seeds and other crops. The lodge that makes sure these are available for birds will indeed stand a good chance of attracting pheasant to their land - and therefore wing-shooters that enjoy hunting pheasant. Likewise, the wing-shooter that likes doves, or quail, will also visit only those lodges where these birds thrive because circumstances allow for great flocks. This is achieved because managers and assistants know how to make sure a certain type of bird enjoys a certain type of habitat – and then go out of their way to provide the ideal habitat. Of course not every habitat everywhere will always be conducive for bird hunting, or whitetail deer hunting, but a lodge can do a lot to compete and stand out above other similar destinations. When they achieve this, they are the ones that will attract the wing-shooters or deer hunters – and build on their name. In America’s South, for example, and in other states too, there are specific regions and states where lodges compete for these visitors. Alabama, for example, offers great opportunities for the hunter, and so does Georgia and Virginia. Fortunately hunters have choices, and the best lodges will always stand out and be the ones that attract the business because they create the ideal circumstances for their visitors – and because they go out of their way to ensure that their hunters and wing-shooters are offered great times and good prey.
