  2. WHAT ARE CALORIES? A calorie describes how much energy a person’s body can get from drinking or eating a certain food. It is a unit of energy, which your body needs. Not every calorie is bad for you. If you eat more calories than you burn, you can gain weight.

  3. TYPES OF CALORIES ARE DIFFERENT You have to know what is in the calories you are eating to stay a healthy weight. The main sources of calories are proteins, carbohydrates and fats. You can have two meals with the same calories, but one can be healthier for you. For example, brown rice with vegetables can have the same calories as a slice of lemon meringue pie, but the rice and vegetables are a better choice because they contain more fiber and nutrients.

  4. CALORIE CONTENT IS KEY What is in the calorie of a food makes all the difference. The amount of Sugar, fiber, water content and fat in a calorie all need to be known. For example, experts note that calorie from fruit is a "better" calorie than a carbohydrate in processed sugar and flour. This is because the fruit has nutrients and fiber. The fruit will keep you full longer than a carbohydrate.
