  1. Hunting A Passion for Many Many Americans grow up around rifles and guns and enthusiasts just like them, individuals and families that enjoy time out in the open, or in the bush, on the savannah or in thickets chasing down buck and birds. Deer hunting and wingshooting are popular activities among thousands in the US – and even millions world- wide. In certain states in the US, for example Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Virginia in the Southeast whitetail deer hunting and wingshooting are famed activities, drawing many visitors every year, from within the US but also from overseas destinations. Many return, often to the same region or county. One such area that seems to remain in demand is Alabama’s Black Belt that enjoys a great following among trophy hunters and wingshooters alike. The Black Belt, so called for its dark rich soil, is well known for its great herds of high quality whitetail deer that remains, for some, the best example of what hunting should be about, for sheer size at times and, of course, for antler characteristics. Hunters, therefore, are always on the lookout for the best region to hunt, and those lodges that stand out for quality are the ones that will always attract the attention. Good lodges, like any other good facility, will come with a reputation as offering the hunter the kind of experience – and trophy – they’re after, but also an experience that is characterized by the professional approach of the owners, their managers and staff, the facilities they offer, such as good accommodation, opportunities to relax with others after the hunt, and opportunities to spend relaxing time with their wives and kids that accompany them, for example. A good lodge caters to all, not only families, but also the single hunter, or the pair, or the group, as hunters are found among different categories, whether you enjoy deer hunting or wingshooting.

  2. Any great lodge knows – and so does the experienced hunter – that no lodge is developed overnight: it often takes years and a few generations to be able to offer the hunter that experience they are after. Not only buildings, food, entertainment and accommodations represent the success of a good lodge: first and foremost it is about the quality of the animals you come out for, and for the deer hunter about being able to leave with that special buck or doe that they are proud to have hunted. Good quality animals do not happen by chance: they are raised in ideal circumstances, and that means that they need to roam freely in great habitat where they have good water from lakes and rivers, good food from the area, also access to well-planned food plots where that is practical. In short: to raise quality deer, the owner and his managers – or biologists at certain lodges – need to ensure their land is conducive to raising the type of animals that hunters will pay for to hunt. Management plans are important: they ensure that good quality buck, wild turkey and birds will be raised on a certain piece of land, at the best lodges. If an owner has, for example, the benefit of fertile soil such as in, say, Alabama’s Black Belt, as well as the input of experienced managers, chances are they will indeed offer their clients great buck and birds for the hunt. These plans include various aspects related to controlling herds so that they are raised well to ensure that balance is always maintained: keeping track of numbers is important. If you overgraze the land, then too many animals have to compete for forage, and likewise, if you cull too many, you quickly deplete herds and the best animals that must form the basis of future herd development. A fine balance is needed, and the role players that get this right, are the ones that manage a good lodge. Therefore these ones are often known in the area, but also much further afield, and they are the ones that, year after year, attract the hunters and wingshooters to visit them.
