  1. About Choosing Your Whitetail Deer Hunting Lodge The American South is famed for its whitetail deer hunting and is often sought out by deer hunters and wing-shooters alike for its many opportunities that help ensure a successful hunt. Of course you have to find the ideal hunting destination. Fortunately certain hunting lodges offer superior experiences, both in terms of the quality of buck and the services the lodge offers its visiting hunters. Hunting is not a cheap sport; therefore hunters will make sure they find the lodge that they believe represents true value. It all starts with choosing the best lodge, whether you are after quail, wild turkey, or many hunters’ favorite, the whitetail deer, of which you find abundant numbers in the states of the Southeast such as, say, Georgia and Alabama. Alabama, especially, is a popular destination for its choice of animals and the quality of deer you find at the good lodges such as Westervelt Lodge at Aliceville, and a few others. For those hunters that may be venturing into this region for the first time: what should you look out for when choosing the lodge you want to visit? Start by looking at lodges’ websites. A website that offers information that may impact you as a deer hunter directly, deserves being considered. Do they have a proud history as a hunting lodge and do they offer years in the industry of accepting hunters on their land and at their facility? What does it say about its history and the facility itself? Does it offer you those conveniences you would like to have access to during your time at the lodge? What are the sleeping arrangements, what meals are offered, and how regularly? Make contact and ask direct questions such as: Can you let me see some references and testimonials made available by previous hunters that have visited your facility? Be sure that a lodge that offers sub-par facilities, is almost sure to offer a bad experience throughout, also when it comes to hunting – the availability, and quality, of animals. Their staff should tell you enough about the lodge. Are they experienced, have they been with the lodge for some time, and what is their background? Does the lodge employ good managers that look after different aspects such as herd control, habitat planning, and do they keep data of their deer herds, for example how many are harvested per season? These are important factors that could well influence the standing of a lodge in its region, and it will give hunters an idea about how well organized – or not – a lodge is and may directly influence how you view them. Find out in what ways the lodge supports hunters’ efforts when it comes to providing quality tree stands, blinds, ladder stands. What can they tell you about their shooting lanes? Ask the lodge about their Quality Deer Management program and how they involve hunters in it? All of these questions are realistic when it comes to helping the hunter choose the lodge they want to visit. With answers that may allay your fears, you may well be in a good position to make decisions. Lodges known to be aware of habitat and deer management plans, are the ones to give preference to, as they establish plans and programs that support good deer herds, healthy buck and doe’s, those animals that will produce quality offspring for hunters to pursue. Trophies are part of the excitement, which is why hunters are more likely to visit lodges known for offering hunters great specimens.
