  1. ED 505 Assistive Technology

  2. What is Assistive Technology? • IDEA ‘04 defines assistive technology is any item, piece or equipment, or product system whether required commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized hat is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability. ( excludes any medical device that is implanted ) • IDEA ‘04 defines an assistive technology service as “any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.” • Students will only be successful using assistive technology when they have both access to devices and to necessary support of services.

  3. Laws • Penny Reed, PhD who is an AT consultant in Roseburg, OR says the law specifies the services w as educators must provide to appropriately implement assistive technology. • “It is mandated by law that assistive technology is both devices and services.” - Margaret E. Bausch, EdD • Some components of the federal law include • Assistive technology evaluation • the purchasing, leasing, or acquisition of equipment • The modification of the equipment • Any adaptations or set-up (software) • Coordination of services • Training of child and child’s family • Training of any and all professionals who will be working with the student

  4. IEP (Individualized Education Plan) • The IEP team will determine if a student will benefit from AT. • The IEP team should consist of people who are knowledgeable about AT, able to provide information, and prepared to search and identify new AT. • Every child with an IEP must be considered for AT and supplied with access to any AT that may help the child be successful in the classroom. This is just one of the ways to make sure every student receives the free appropriate public education. • The (WATI) Wisconsin Assistive Technology is commonly used as a guide for AT consideration • http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/wp-content/uploads/modules/at/pdfs/at_04_link_WATI.pdf#content

  5. Factors important to successful implementation of Assistive Technology • Understanding that services are just as important as devices. • Choosing the appropriate device and follow up with appropriate services. • Know the task needing to be completed BEFORE choosing an AT. • AT can not be assigned based solely on a child’s disability. • Professionals should stay up to date on new AT, as it is growing fast. • Do not include specific brand names on the IEP, this will give the opportunity to try out different devices. • Teachers need to embrace the use of AT and know the legal requirements of using AT. • Good communication and support between parents, teachers, and IEP team.

  6. Hearing impaired • Personal frequency modulation, or FM, systems transmit sound from the speaker's microphone to an FM receiver and from there to the user's hearing aids.

  7. Seeing impaired Screen magnifiers can magnify all screen items, including the mouse pointer, text cursor, icons, buttons, and title bars.

  8. Learning disabled A study nook can help students who get distracted easily, this AT device works for children with various disabilities such as downs syndrome, adhd, add, etc… Communication device- students may use to show how they are feeling if they are unable to verbalize how they are feeling.
