Why is capturing diffuse light such a challenge? • Optical films and coatings work best when light is incident at 90o • For silicon cells the surfaces have to be textured to reduce back reflection (high refractive index) • Diffuse light collection requires simultaneous collection over wide angular range. • Low total collection leads to reduced voltage and poorer inverter efficiency. Sun angle high - high absorption Sun angle low -high reflection Diffuse light - high reflection
Designing PV modules to work well under diffuse light • Front surface of collector needs to transmit light to absorber • Any solution must be low cost • Add to existing PV module technology? Light collection film PV module

11 The Cd(1-x)Zn(x)S/CdTe device - layer by layer • ITO coated alumino-silicate substrate (ITO being the TCO front contact). • Cd(1-x)Zn(x)S window layer (240 nm). • CdTe absorber layer (2250 nm); • Cl treatment - in situ CdCl2 deposition & anneal. • Thermal evaporation of Au onto ITO (front contact) and CdTe (back contact) - Ga/In paste can also be used for front contact.
