  1. Mean daily solar radiation shows effect of upland regions

  2. Climate in upland regions of Wales Tryfan summit 5th November 13.42 Tryfan summit 5th November 13.59

  3. OpTIC façade monitoring shows effect of cloud cover and sun at low elevations 9/11/2011 10/11/2011

  4. Why is capturing diffuse light such a challenge? • Optical films and coatings work best when light is incident at 90o • For silicon cells the surfaces have to be textured to reduce back reflection (high refractive index) • Diffuse light collection requires simultaneous collection over wide angular range. • Low total collection leads to reduced voltage and poorer inverter efficiency. Sun angle high - high absorption Sun angle low -high reflection Diffuse light - high reflection
