Opening Sequence Analysis Vita Pestman-Mackintosh, Sophie Superfine, Phoebe Little
What is the film about? Examples of Low-Key lighting • The short clip revolves around a dead man and his newly-transformed clone • The key themes/genres appear to be Mystery, Sci-Fi and Horror • The main question: "Why there does he want to be clone/ what are his intentions?" • Low-key lighting • Focused shots- intimate with the audience • Contrastingly, the clone wears a hood and mask to cover his identity • Realistic scary props & large quantity of props—believable
Why watch more? • Left on a cliff hanger—intriguing • No music but you can hear him walking – ominious, secrecy, eery • When he pulls down his mask and lifts off his hood, music starts which suggests this part is significant • The font of "clone" at the end it intrigues us because the "l" is a syringe and connotes blood dripping • The props shown at the end of the clip, during the title sequence, foreshadow what could happen in the upcoming scenes
Rest of the plot? • Why is the clone wanting to take over the original man—is he planning on taking other people's identities? Why? • Maybe he wants to take over the world/he's power-hungry? Once his mask and hood come off – music starts • Red light: warning, dangerous—foreshadows the dangerous future of the movie • Are there more bodies stored away somewhere? Lots of blood on apron; it can't just be from one body
Who are the characters? What are we meant to feel about them? • Main subject: Man portrays an evil character • Audience feels suspense when looking at the male subject • He seems like a powerful character committing a dangerous crime • Second subject: Man lying on the bed— Evil clone man has turned himself into the dead man • The dead man suggests that he has qualities that the clone wants
Aspects which you think are good/bad in terms of quality? • Once the evil clone man reveals his face, it isn't immediately clear The dead man and the alive clone-man wasn't clear straight away that they were the same person • Maybe they could add something recognizable (a scar in the same place) to clearly show they're the same person • The lighting was very good quality; the contrasts of colours helped set the thriller mood/aesthetic of the movie The "face reveal" shot
