  2. CORONA VIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) •WHAT IS COVID-19? •HOW IS THE VIRUS SPREAD? SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus that was identified in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019 and causes the disease known as Covid-19. It has now spread to all continents and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organigation on the 11th March 2020. There is currently person to person spread of the virus. The virus that causes COVID-19 probably emerged from an animal source but is now spreading from person to person through respiratory droplets when a person coughs and sneezes. It may also be possible to get infected by touching a surface or an object that has virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes, but this is not the main way that the virus spreads.
