According to experts, the JE virus is now probably widespread in Papua New Guinea. As there is very little public health infrastructure and monitoring in PNG, it is unknown that how widely the virus is dispersed throughout the country. JE is caused by the virus called flavivirus. It is very dangerous viral disease. Only about one third can recover, while about one third suffer with permanent brain damage, and rest dies of infected persons. It is commonly not mentioned in the tour brochures, because this is a rare disease. But rare does not mean never. It is dreadful and very hard to treat. Medical science can only give supportive care and hope the body and the brain recovers by itself. If you get sick, it may cost you unrecoverable damage. This serious viral disease is preventable by vaccination. We provide a one dose vaccine (more improved than previous vaccines) for adults that gives lifetime protection. The vaccine costs about $300 that is cheaper than one day in hospital. The vaccine has a low incidence of side effects. As there is no specific treatment for this viral infection, preventive measure is the best option to utilise.
