“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

-Galatians 6:14

even the death of the cross
“Even the Death of the Cross”
  • Phil 2:5-8
  • 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
psalms 22 23 24
Psalms 22:23-24
  • 23 You who fear the LORD, praise Him; All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
  • And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel.
  • 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
he heard he responded
“He heard”. . .He responded
  • With such matchless love!
  • Demonstrated by his willingness to sacrifice and suffer on our behalf.
    • We love Him because He first loved us! I Jn 4:19
    • He loved us while we yet sinners Rm 5:8
  • The greater sacrifice was spiritual, mental and emotional.
  • As human beings the physical passion arrests our attention.
    • JESUS: “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.“ Jn 12:32

The Roman scourge, also called the "flagrum" or "flagellum" was a short whip made of two or three leather (ox-hide) thongs or ropes connected to a handle. The leather thongs were knotted with a number of small pieces of metal, usually zinc and iron, attached at various intervals. Scourging would quickly remove the skin. According to history the punishment of a slave was particularly dreadful. The leather was knotted with bones, or heavy indented pieces of bronze.
