  1. Basic Principles of Multibeam Echo Sounder Presented by Submitted to

  2. 1 Depth Determination Department of Oceanography, SUST There are different types of acoustic and non-acoustic system for depth detection. They are: Side Scan Sonar(SSS) Single Beam Echo Sounder(SBES) Multi Beam Echo Sounder(MBES) Airborne Laser Airborne Electromagnetic System

  3. 2 Multi Beam Echo Sounder(MBES) Department of Oceanography, SUST ? Why MBES

  4. 3 System Effectiveness Comparison Department of Oceanography, SUST

  5. 4 Basic Principle of MBES(1) Department of Oceanography, SUST A fan shaped transmission pulse directed towards the seafloor. Total area of seafloor insonified by transmission pulse. 1

  6. 4 Basic Principle of MBES(2) Department of Oceanography, SUST • Area of seafloor covered by receiving hydrophones. Signals are received from 16 rectangular zones. • The two-way travel time between transmission and reception is computed by seabed detection algorithms. • Ray tracing method calculate the depth and transverse distance to the center of the ensonified area. 2 3 4
