  1. GROUP DISCUSSION TIPS AND TRICKS Group discussions are a very important part of placement tests and all entrance exams. To learn the right way to do group discussions, it is very important to unlearn certain things that you have learned over the years. Here are some GD myths busted: 1.THE INITIATOR SCORES THE HIGHEST: While initiating the interview does help you get the moderator’s attention, it can backfire on you badly if you don’t have anything relevant or substantial to say. The initiator is expected to introduce the topic properly and give it the right start. 2.SPEAKING MORE DOESN’T MEAN MORE KNOWLEDGE: Some candidates speak so much that they do not give others a chance to speak. This kind of behavior makes you look like an attention seeker. Contributing to the discussion 2 – 3 times with something substantial is sufficient. 3.SPEAKING LOUDLY DOESN’T MEAN HIGH CONFIDENCE: Speaking loudly is not required at any point during a GD. It makes you look aggressive, intimidating, bossy and all negative things.

  2. 4.TOUGH LANGUAGE DOESN’T MEAN GOOD LANGUAGE: Speaking technical jargons among people who don’t understand them is simply a waste of time and energy. A GD is not a place to flaunt your vocabulary skills. The speed of your delivery should be moderate so that everyone can fully understand you. 5.STATS DON’T REFLECT KNOWLEDGE: While facts and figures substantiate what you say and showcase your knowledge, overloading the discussion with figures becomes very repulsive. Provide the facts and figures but don’t overdo it. These are the things that can probably stop you from getting any further in your interview process. It is important to unlearn these things in order to propel in group discussions. Here are a few things which can help you propel ahead of other candidates in the group: 1.RELEVANT POINTS: Good knowledge and staying relevant to the topic are definitely the two most impressive qualities required to do well in a group discussion. There are certain topics which belong to the all time favorite category of the moderators. Be sure to check out all the latest news to be well informed. 2.LISTEN CAREFULLY: This is perhaps the most ignored part when preparing for a group discussion. Listening is an art and you need to master it if you want to pass a group discussion with flying colors. You will have nothing relevant and useful to say if you don’t listen to what others say attentively. 3.PRACTICE IN FRONT OF THE MIRROR: There are candidates who have intricate knowledge of every topic but still they are not able to make it through the group discussion round. This happens because they are not really good at expressing themselves. Expressing your thoughts and points in the most effective manner and in the shortest of time period is the point of a group discussion. Such candidates should practice speaking in front of the mirror. This exercise will help them to speak confidently. Also, it is a very good way to work on expressions and intonation. 4.PRESENCE OF MIND: Alertness and presence of mind of the candidate are very crucial in group discussions. This is one quality that doesn’t go unnoticed and it impresses the selectors tremendously. To be able to exercise this, you must have extremely good listening skills. Pay close attention to the body language of the candidates because half of what the candidate says is conveyed through body language. This will not only help you in dealing with objections or supporting a claim but will also give you an opportunity to showcase your social skills by supporting someone in need or stopping the group from getting distracted etc. 5.STICK TO THE TOPIC: Every GD topic has a purpose and needs to come to a conclusion. But with so many participants, it is very easy for a discussion to get off the track. You should immediately get the group back on track by reminding everybody of the expectations from the topic. Having a notepad and pen can do wonders for you in a

  3. group discussion. You can simply jot down your points on a notepad which will help you to stick to the topic of the group discussion. Group discussions have become an easy and effective tool to eliminate unsuitable candidates from the selection process. Keep all these points in mind and you will be able to nail your group discussion round.
