Currency and cash were now not used in Australia previous to the appearance of the First Fleet in 1788, whilst the British mounted their Crown Colony at New South Wales. The colonists had no mints or reputable coinage of their personal and were forced to apply whatever coins they might find, British or foreign. Some colonists delivered coins with them after they arrived at the island, however commonly they obtained those coins by means of exchange with ships arriving in Australia.
