  2. What is backflow? Backflow is the undesirable reversal of the flow of water from its intended direction in any pipeline or plumbing system. Backflow is dangerous because it can allow drinking water in plumbing systems to become contaminated and unusable.

  3. How can backflow occur? Backflow can occur two different ways, by backsiphonage and backpressure. What is Back Siphonage? When there is a sudden reduction in the water pressure in the distribution system, such as during  fire fighting or when a water main breaks, water flow can be reversed. This can create a suction effect, drawing potential contaminates into the potable water distribution system.

  4. What is Backpressure? Backpressure is created when pressure in a nonpotable system, such as in a recirculating system containing soap, acid, or antifreeze, exceeds the pressure in the potable system providing the makeup water. This can force the potable water to reverse its direction of flow through the cross-connection between the two systems. Potential contaminates can then enter the potable water system.

  5. How can backflow be prevented? • Backflow-prevention devices stop these contaminants from entering the water system. • There are several different types of backflow preventers available : • Air Gap (AG) • Reduced Pressure Backflow Prevention Assembly (RP) • Double Check Backflow Prevention Assembly (DC) • Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) • Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB) • Spill-Proof Pressure Vacuum Breaker (SVB)
