Presenter: Melvin Bell, Focus Games Ltd. Patient safety and staff training are inseparable. Many patient harms are avoidable and often the improvements to avoid patient harm are simple and don’t require new technology or complex support. If we can persuade healthcare professionals to make small beneficial improvements to care delivery through simple and effective education then harm may be reduced. How do we persuade staff to do their jobs differently when healthcare systems are so large and resources increasingly scarce? It is possible to deliver engaging training that leads to behavioural changes using new and innovative tools. Serious games are being used in healthcare to provide a different approach to help healthcare professionals change how they work. Focus Games has been developing healthcare games since 2004. They’ve developed over 30 games that are being used by healthcare professionals and patients internationally. They will describe their journey and the things they’ve learned over the past 11 years.
