  1. Simple Explanation of Working & Applications of Step Up Converters Step up converters are devices that ramp up the voltage from 120 to 220V. If you are in the US, the standard voltage used in your household is 120 V. Some countries like the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Panama, Venezuela and Puerto Rico have the same voltage supply rating. Other countries have a standard single-phase voltage of 220V. These places include most countries in Europe, Russia, Peru, and most countries in Asia including Korea, Macau, and the Philippines. If you have an item with a voltage input of 220 V, you can now use it even in a country with 120 V supply when you have a step-up converter. A step-up converter is designed to turn a 110V supply to a 220V in an instant. The simplest step up converter consists of a magnet wire, a transistor, diode, and a capacitor. The number of turns created from the magnetic wire determines the increase in voltage supply. The wire coil is the inductor of the circuit. The inductor is the heart of any converter. When a power source is connected to the inductor, an electric field is created. When it is disconnected to the source, the field collapses and induces a voltage to the circuit. Again, the higher the number of coils, the higher the voltage. The transistor in the converter acts as a switch that turns on and off. It has three layers of semiconductor material that can carry a current. When the transistor switches on, the inductor produces an electric field. When it switches off, the induced current goes to the diode and capacitor. The capacitor charges and the voltage rises. The final voltage of the capacitor is dependent on the inductor characteristics and the power source. This means that a 120 V power source can be altered to 220 V through the use of a step up converter. With this great product, you can now purchase items abroad and use them in the US.
