learning to lead! At SBS, we believe that leadership begins early—during the formative middle years when students are discovering their identities, forming friendships, and learning to take ownership. The Middle School Student Parliament brings this belief to life by providing a meaningful platform for students in Grades 6 to 8 to express their views, contribute ideas, and engage in decision-making. Through collaboration with faculty and involvement in shaping school life, students gain valuable experience in task management, teamwork, and respectful dialogue—skills that prepare them for future leadership and responsible citizenship. This year, the Middle school student parliament took oath on May 5 2025. th But what does the Student Parliament do? As Shikha from Middle School faculty explains, “Their duties go beyond mere tasks—they’re lessons in teamwork, problem-solving, and initiative”. Empathy is also at the heart of their work. Prerna from our English faculty reminds us that, “Watching middle schoolers take ownership transforms our school community… these young leaders reimagine our school as a place where every voice counts. Sometimes, the youngest voices carry the most radical hope.” “एक ऐसा मंच, जहाँ बच्चे न िसफ? अपने अिधकार? और कत?व्य? को जान?, बि?क नेतृ?व का आ?मिव?ास भी महसूस कर?”।- Mamta Rajneesh What Our Student Leaders Have to Say… For many members, the Student Parliament has been a transformative experience—building confidence, honing communication skills, and offering a real-world taste of leadership. Here are a few excerpts from the end of year reflection :- “ “Volunteering to speak in front of a large crowd gave me a glimpse into the assertiveness and patience needed to lead, improving my leadership qualities.” “Being a member of the Student Parliament provided me the opportunity to be actively involved in the school community. Student Parliament allowed me to actively participate during PE lessons to ensure discipline. On PTM days, I interacted with many parents that helped boost my confidence and made me understand the importance of representing the school community.” “As a member of the Student Parliament, I have certainly observed significant personal growth this year.” “ The Middle School Student Parliament is not just a body; it’s a living proof that young people are leaders today— not just tomorrow. Through trust, mentorship, and meaningful opportunities, our students rise to the challenge, creating a culture of participation, initiative, and hope that extends far beyond the school gates. 2

Samvaad When Voices Were Heard, Hearts Were Samvaad: Opened, and Learning Got Real th th The week of July 7 to 11 felt a little different on campus — lighter in tone, warmer in spirit, and richer in conversation. With textbooks set aside and timetables reshuffled, students in the Middle School stepped into something altogether more personal and powerful: Samvaad. Aptly named, Samvaad—meaning ‘dialogue’—an experience for those who were a part of this event. Designed for students of Grade 6, this thoughtfully crafted initiative focused on some of life’s most important (and often overlooked) skills: empathy, collaboration, emotional resilience, and the ability to express oneself in a safe, respectful, and non-judgmental space. Convened by the School Counselling team, each day was packed with carefully designed, age-appropriate activities. The “Broken Square” challenge—a team activity that looked deceptively simple. In the “Balloon Activity”—students wrote personal boundaries on balloons and attempted to keep them afloat. Next came the “Circle of Boundaries” visualisation, where students mapped out people and spaces that made them feel safe and respected, and those that didn’t. Scenario-based role plays further helped them rehearse real-life situations—be it peer pressure, misunderstandings, or emotional discomfort—practising how to respond assertively and empathetically. Perhaps the most touching moment came toward the end of the week, when students took to the stage to share their reflections with their parents. Through drawings, group presentations, and honest words, they spoke of their fears, their triumphs, and what they had discovered about themselves. In a world that often rushes children from one milestone to the next, Samvaad was a gentle yet powerful pause. A reminder that education is not only about what we know, but about who we are becoming. 6
A Slice of Sunshine and Mangoes th On July 15 , the classrooms of Grade 1 turned golden as children came together to celebrate the Mango Festival — a cheerful tribute to the ‘King of Fruits’. From the juicy Alphonsoto the tangyTotapuri, every bite invited them to savour the diversity of India’s beloved fruit. It was a day of discovery, sunshine, and smiles — a sweet celebration that our young learners are sure to remember for summers to come. Into the Wild: A Conversation with Abhishek Ray -- Musician. On July 17 and 18 , the spotlight was on the parents of Grades 2 to 5 as they stepped into their children’s shoes for a hands-on, minds-on Math Workshop — and what a lively learning journey it was! Designed to bridge the home-school connection, the two-day workshop transformed traditional perceptions of mathematics into something far more relatable, enjoyable, and meaningful. Parents explored fun, age-appropriate strategies that they could easily use at home, from building number sense to solving real-life problems over a family meal or grocery run. The sessions were filled with lightbulb moments, friendly laughter, and even a few “Oh, so that’s how it works!” reactions. It was less about formulas and more about fostering a shared love for thinking, questioning, and exploring the why behind the what. Fostering a Culture of Safety and Appreciation at SBS July at SBS was marked by a series of impactful initiatives focused on strengthening safety, preparedness, and community spirit. The staff actively participated in training workshops, starting with the Emergency Response Workshop, which equipped the trainees with essential knowledge to handle incidents like fires, natural disasters etc. Through practical simulations and guided protocols, participants learned to respond swiftly and effectively in real emergencies. The second training program focused on Basic First Aid and CPR, offering hands-on instruction in life-saving techniques. In addition, our support staff underwent important awareness training on POCSO and POSH. These sessions were designed to enhance understanding of legal safeguards and promote a culture of safety, respect, and accountability in the workplace. Adding a celebratory note to the month, the admin team organized Umang Utsav—a heartfelt event dedicated to our support staff. Tokens of gratitude and words of thanks made the occasion truly special. UNDERSTANDING NEURODIVERSITY: EMBRACING EVERY LEARNER Students acquire concepts in varied ways, and depending on their cognitive styles, learning preferences, and individual needs, they may respond better to different instructional strategies such as visual aids, hands-on activities, collaborative tasks, or independent study. Through interactive discussions and case studies, teachers explored practical strategies for classroom accommodations—ranging from flexible seating and visual schedules to modified assignments and sensory breaks. 10
It’s easy to get caught up in how others see you— what you wear, how you rank, how you fit in. But take a step back, be yourself. That’s where real confidence grows. - Batch of 2022 From Academia to National Service Yash Shroff, now preparing to begin his journey at the National University of Singapore (NUS), reflects on a defining chapter in his life—the transition he had long anticipated. “I always knew that finishing school meant reporting for National Service,” he shares, referencing Singapore’s mandatory enlistment for all males over 18 under the Enlistment Act. “The field camp was a different world altogether,” recounts. “We were out in the wild for nearly five days—no shelter, no comforts. I had to dig my own trench in the ground just to sleep, lying in mud with my rifle by my side.” He pauses, the memory still vivid. “It was grueling, raw, and completely unforgettable. That was the moment I realised—I wasn’t a student anymore. I was a soldier”. “National Service in Singapore is a formative journey that strengthens one’s Yash bond with the nation. The experience builds resilience and belonging, shaping a generation that stands stronger together. For Yash, this period of his life was not a sudden shift but rather a deeply anticipated change. Spanning for two years, the journey was full of growth, challenges, and profound national pride. “This duty isn’t unique to us—countries like Switzerland, South Korea, and others follow similar paths—but the transition is universally intense,” Yash shares. The first part of the service was a test of survival. From mastering wilderness living and handling firearms to overcoming obstacle courses and learning defensive tactics, Yash was thrust into an environment where everything pushed him beyond his limits. “It was all about becoming combat-capable,” he recalls. “But what I remember most are the friendships—people who shared the same exhaustion, fears, and laughs. Those bonds got me through.” 11
The experience, he says, taught him grit and resilience. “It’s a reminder of what those who serve go through so the rest of us—whether in Singapore or India—can enjoy the freedoms and comforts we often take for granted.” The second phase of service brought more focused responsibility. “It wasn’t just service—it was real responsibility,” he says. Far from just "getting through" the experience, Yash thrived, growing into the role with resilience and maturity. SBS continues to hold a special place in Yash's heart. He laughs as he recalls the “lag excuses” during online classes, the quirky Hindi Zoom backgrounds, and the unforgettable graduation, complete with boys on horseback. “Even being falsely accused and sent to the on-call room once,” he chuckles, “is a memory I wouldn’t trade.” The school memories are filled with moments that transcend the classroom. From negotiating with Bhaiyas and Didis for extra mishri after lunch to playing tennis under the scorching sun, these seemingly small moments became the building blocks for the larger perspectives that shaped him. “SBS helped shape how I think, reason, and act today.” As a young man, Yash has walked very different paths —military bases, office cubicles, and school corridors— but through it all, he has stayed rooted in learning, balance, and clarity. “I try to give time to everything—studying, reading, socializing, even just being bored. It keeps me content, and always growing.” With NUS on the horizon, Yash’s journey is just beginning, and it promises to be extraordinary. For current students, his story is a reminder that the path Teachers’ Fond Reflections ahead may be unpredictable, but it is through those unexpected turns that real growth happens. “Amiable, lively, and always brimming with good humour, Yash was “Yash was truly one of the most endearing often the heart of his class back in SBS. Whether defusing tense students I had the chance to work with. There moments with his cheerful banter, indulging in a pen fight, or was a quiet strength about him—focused, breaking into an impromptu dance, he brought joy and energy mature beyond his years, and so innately wherever he went. His ability to laugh at himself and lift the spirits of curious. What stood out was his ability to think those around him made him not just a memorable student, but a truly deeply and engage meaningfully, without ever cherished friend. Recently, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with needing to be the loudest voice in the room. him — now a young man who has completed two years of training That level of maturity at his age was rare, and with the National Service, Singapore and is preparing to begin college. it’s what made him such a perceptive and Polite, easygoing, and just as engaging as ever, Yash remains a delight promising young person. I genuinely enjoyed to talk to and continues to carry his warmth and charm with grace.” being his teacher and watching him grow.” - Neera Sukhwani - Payel Duttagupta 12
