Injury Prevention • Most injuries in the LTP will be caused by lack of skill and will be minor in nature • As a leader, you should strive to minimize the chance of injury occurring…particularly injuries caused by faulty equipment or unsafe facilities • If we understand the causes of injuries, we can think of ways to prevent them IIHF Learn To Play Program

Injury Prevention • Leaders should have a basic knowledge of First Aid • Get information on health status of your players • Check out facilities & equipment • Don’t force injured players back too soon • Be familiar with emergency procedures in the arena, the location of the 1st aid kit and telephone • Take care of minor injuries quickly so they don’t become major ones • Check the players equipment to make sure it fits IIHF Learn To Play Program

  5. Protective Equipment • Athletic supporter and cup • Garter belt (or equivalent) • Shin pads • Pants • Shoulder pads • Elbow pads • Helmet - approved IIHF Learn To Play Program

  6. Equipment (cont) • Face mask – approved – wire or clear plastic • Gloves • Skates • Junior sized stick IIHF Learn To Play Program

  7. Warm-up • Play a game • Get the body temperature up • Get the heart pumping • Get the blood flowing IIHF Learn To Play Program

On-Ice Safety • Make sure all doors are closed • Remove any foreign objects from the ice • Teach players how to fall • Ensure proper fitting equipment is worn • Instructor should wear a helmet • Don’t permit ‘horse play’ • Ensure shooting drills are conducted in a safe manner IIHF Learn To Play Program
