  2. A TECHNIQUE FOR READING SKILLS  SQ3R

  3. WHAT IS SQ3R?? SQ3R is a reading strategy formed from its letters: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. This method involves immaculate and perfect reading, that is, you read so as to teach what is read or be able to explain or apply the knowledge obtained in other domains. Through this method, the reader assimilates the information in such a way that he/she can use it later at an appropriate place or occasion. In this method, the reader absorbs the information and uses it without having to refer to notes or the book again.

  4. SURVEY Survey means to view or consider something comprehensively. Before you read a chapter or a book, you should apply the surveying technique. The purpose of surveying the chapter or a book is to get a general idea of what it is going to be about, what kind of information the author gives, how many sub-topics the information is broken down into, and how much time you will have to spend in reading it. For this, you should carefully consider the title of the chapter or book, its objectives, specific vocabulary, captions under pictures, charts, graphs or maps and summary. This is in order to identify ideas and its coverage. For this, you should not take more than 10-25 minutes, even on the longest chapter.

  5. QUESTION You should always formulate questions about the content of whatever you are reading. For example, What is this chapter about?, What are the major highlights?, How will the given information be helpful for me?, etc. Other more general questions may also be formulated. For this you can turn the title, headings, and/or subheadings into questions and also read the questions given at the end of the chapters or each subheading.

  6. READ At this stage, you should use the background work you have done with 'S' and 'Q' the questions given at the end of the chapters or after each subheading. in order to begin reading actively. This means reading in order to answer the questions raised under 'Q' you should not involve yourself in passive reading, as it results in merely reading word by word without engaging with the reading material actually. For this, you should reduce your speed for difficult passages and also stop and re-read parts which are not clear.

  7. RECITE The second 'R' refers to the part known as 'Recite' or 'Recall'. You now orally ask yourself questions about what you have just read, or summarize, in your own words, what you read. It is advisable to take notes from the text, but write the information in your own words. You may underline or highlight important points you have just read. It is said that the more senses you use, the more likely you are to remember what you read.

  8. REVIEW The third 'R' stands for review. At this stage, students should have a study test themselves by attempting to recall the key phrases. This method will help you to immedi ately review all sections pertaining to any key words forgotten. You can think about how you would explain the ideas to someone who knows nothing about the topic. Thus, this step is very important as it helps "fix' the information in your long-term memory.
