  1. How to Deal with Glaucoma ?

  2. What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is relatively very common eye disease which usually affects the older adults. In Glaucoma, the pressure of the eye fluids increases which causes damage to the optic nerve. If it is not treated soon, the patient may lose his or her vision.

  3. Symptoms of Glaucoma Vision loss resulting from Glaucoma is permanent. But early detection, careful lifelong treatment, medication, and surgery can help the patient maintain his / her vision. Here are some symptoms of Glaucoma:

  4. • Hazy vision • Eye and Head Pain • Nausea • Appearance of rainbow coloured circles around bright light. • Sudden sight loss.

  5. Who Gets Glaucoma? Everyone is at risk – from babies and young people to older adults. But people who are at higher risk are - • Aged 60 years + • Have relatives with Glaucoma • Myopic or hyperopic • Suffers from Thyroid disease. • Use Steroid medicines. • Have a thin central cornea • Have had a head injury. • Have Diabetes

  6. Types of Glaucoma • Open-Angle Glaucoma :-It’s caused by the slow clogging of the drainage canals which as a result increases pressure in the eye. It has a wide and open angle between the iris and cornea. If it is detected at early stage it is treatable with medication. • Angle-Closure Glaucoma:- An acute Angle-Closure Glaucoma requires immediate medical attention. The intraocular pressure rises very quickly and that results in blurred vision, redness, nausea, and rainbow coloured rings around the bright lights. Laser peripheral iridotomy procedure is used to treat this type of Glaucoma. • Secondary Glaucoma:- Patients with an eye injury, tumor, in advanced cases of cataract, or those who consume steroids are usually affected with this type of Glaucoma. It can be mild or severe and the treatment done for this is based on whether it is open-angle or angle-closure Glaucoma.

  7. • Pigmentary Glaucoma:- This kind of Glaucoma is the form of secondary open-angle Glaucoma. It also happens when tiny pigment granules create pressure in the eye. It is treated with medication, laser surgery or filtering surgery. • Normal-tension Glaucoma (NTG):- In this case optic nerve is damaged though intraocular pressure is not very high. Patients with this type of Glaucoma have family history of normal-tension glaucoma. • Congenital Glaucoma:- This kind of Glaucoma is generally seen in the babies due to their incomplete eye development related issues. • Exfoliative Glaucoma:- It is also known as pseudoexfoliative Glaucoma. • Neovascular Glaucoma:- Patients with Diabetes, are at a higher risk of getting affected by this type of Glaucoma. It happens due to abnormal formation of new blood vessels on the iris • Uveitic Glaucoma:- This type of Glaucoma happens due to increased eye pressure in the uveitis. • Traumatic Glaucoma:- Patients suffering from this type of Glaucoma have had an eye injury in the past.

  8. How is Glaucoma Diagnosed? For detecting Glaucoma, these mentioned factors play an important role • Pressure in the eye. • Checking the shape and color of the optic nerve. • Eye angles where iris meets the cornea. • Thickness of the cornea. • Field of vision checking by Perimetry test.

  9. Is Glaucoma Curable? Early detection of the Glaucoma is important. Once it’s detected at an early stage, then with proper care, right medication and treatment, eye pressure control can be done. Glaucoma can be controlled but there is no cure. Regular check-ups by eye specialists can save your vision.

  10. Tips at a glance for living with Glaucoma: • Ask your doctor for guiding you about the eye exercises that reduce the pressure in your eyes. • Always keep your eyes clean and free of irritants. • Be very careful while using eye makeup and cosmetics. • Never rub your eyes. • Eat food that contain high amount of antioxidants. • Be sure that you are taking medicines and eye drops as directed by your doctor on time. • Quit smoking as it causes eye inflammation. • Try to consume caffeine less as it increases eye pressure.
