Il condizionale The conditional is used to express a doubt, a wish or a possibility: •Vorrei un panino al prosciutto. (I would like a ham sandwich.) • Che cosa avremmo dovuto fare? (What should we have done?) The conditional is also used in reported speech.

The conditional is used to express a doubt, a wish or a possibility:•Vorrei un panino al prosciutto. (I would like a ham sandwich.) • Che cosa avremmo dovuto fare? (What should we have done?)

In English, the conditional is used for reported speech with a past tense verb of saying ("She said she would come") andthe future tense is used for reported speech with a present tense verb of saying ("She says she will come").

In Italian, though, the present conditional is used with a present tense verb of saying:Dice che verrebbe. (She says she would come.)

The past conditional is used with a past tense verb of saying:Ha detto che sarebbe venuta. (She said she would have come.)

The present conditional is based on the future stem, and adds identical personal endings to all three conjugations:
