  1. Normalcy has Come to Fore, Education Looks Brighter for Students Abroad The COVID-19 pandemic left a lasting impression on all industries. On the other hand, the tremor effects on the education sector are still being felt. Although online education opened up new avenues, the international education industry faced a significant backlash due to travel restrictions imposed to stop the spread of the virus. The massive drop in students going abroad between 2019 and 2021 is a clear indication of the aforementioned fact. According to the Ministry of External Affairs’ data, the number of students dropped from 588,931 in 2019 to 261,406 in 2020, with many students postponing their travel plans due to the pandemic. However, as the world returns to normalcy, opportunities for aspiring students are once again becoming available. The numbers are already on the rise; in the first two months of 2021 alone, 71,769 students studied abroad, and it is expected to rise further. The ‘new-normal’ chiefly involves people getting acclimated to the current situation. Many changed and updated their preferred destination based on the legal restrictions in different countries. For example, with Australia facing a complete lockdown, the traffic of international students shifted to countries like France, Germany, and UAE. Welcoming the rising numbers, Emmanuel Lenain, the ambassador of France to India, says, “I am glad to see that despite the pandemic, a growing number of Indian students are choosing France for their study abroad." Countries and universities have been very accommodating, keeping insight into the global situation. “The UK has supported Indian and other international students to earn their credentials from some of the most renowned universities in the world safely and securely through this period,” says Rittika Chanda Parruck, Director, Education – India, British Council. Considering the significant financial constraints that the students face when studying abroad, many countries are also offering financial aid and scholarships to attract more students. France has emerged as a desirable destination, providing more than Rs. 10 crore in scholarships to over 500 Indian students each year. Studying in France opens up a plethora of opportunities for educational excellence, thanks to their highly ranked and renowned educational institutions. It contributes to the delivery of an evolved international perspective, allowing them to thrive in the most competitive global scenarios.
