  1. Understanding Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your urinary system — your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.

  2. Causes and Risk Factors 1 Bacterial Invasion Mainly Escherichia coli (E. coli) from the bowel entering the urinary tract via the urethra. 2 Female Anatomy Shorter urethra and its proximity to the anus increases bacterial entry risk. 3 Lifestyle Factors Sexual activity, use of diaphragms, and spermicides can increase vulnerability. 4 Other Conditions Menopause, pregnancy, urinary tract abnormalities, and poor hygiene contribute to risk.

  3. Prevention Strategies Simple lifestyle adjustments and hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of developing UTIs. Stay Hydrated Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract. Proper Hygiene Wipe from front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacterial spread. Post-Sex Habits Urinate before and immediately after sexual activity. Underwear Choices Wear loose-fitting clothing and cotton underwear to keep the area dry and prevent bacterial growth.
