Understanding Broadcast Television • What is Analog Television? • The signal that has been in use since May 10, 1928 • WRGB-TV, Schenectady, NY – Still on the air • WWOR-TV, Newark, NJ – Still on the air • By 1939 the three major networks were started in NY • Standardized in 1949 as NTSC • National Television System Committee • In 1953, color was added to the existing standard • NTSC has a hue problem (Europe solved with PAL) • VHF – Very High Frequency 30MHz – 300MHz • UHF – Ultra High frequency 300MHz – 3000MHz (3GHz) 2008 HDT Rally . Understanding Broadcast Television • What is Digital Television? • Replacement signal definition for NTSC (analog), called ATSC • Advanced Television System Committee • Committee formed in 1982 • Adopted by the FCC on December 4, 1996 • Adopted by Argentina in 1998 • By October 2000 in the USA, there were 158 stations in 55 markets broadcasting DTV to 65% of television viewers nationwide. • By November 2005, the numbers were 1525 stations in 211 markets with 95% coverage of television viewers. • Signals are broadcast over VHF/UHF frequencies 2008 HDT Rally . Understanding Broadcast Television • Do I Need a Digital Antenna ? • Frequencies are exactly the same as it was for analog television • You do not NEED a new antenna • … but you might want a better antenna • The signal changes from a wave form to a stream of 1’s and 0’s. • Waveforms are still recognizable even with large errors • More errors equal more snow and static • Stream of 1’s and 0’s is unrecognizable with very small errors • More errors equal NO picture and/or no sound 2008 HDT Rally . Understanding Aspect Ratio • Aspect Ratio • Written as Width:Height of the picture image. • SDTV – Retronym for the standard picture • 4:3, Full Screen, 1.33 to 1 • HDTV – Same as most movies • 16:9, Widescreen • Letterbox – a 16:9 image shown in 4:3 format with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. • Not all widescreen DVD’s 16:9, 1.65 to 1 • 1.78 to 1, 1.85 to 1, 2.35 to 1 2008 HDT Rally . Understanding DVD • CD – ROM (1982), VCD (1993) • Compact Disc Read Only Memory (Audio and Data) 0.8gb, 80 min. • Digital Video Disc (1997) – 480 lines of resolution • Stores at least 4.7gb, up to 9.4gb • Two competing standards, both are 1080i (2006) • HD-DVD – Toshiba, Microsoft, Paramount, United Artists 30gb • Blu-Ray – SONY, Disney, Playstation 3 50gb • As of February 2008, Blu-Ray wins as HD-DVD vendors halt production • Upscale older DVD’s to 1080i for playback • Upscaling DVD Players (2007) • Takes a 480 resolution DVD and displays it in 1080i resolution • They do not play HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs • Wait for Blu-Ray to stop rebooting (2009?) 2008 HDT Rally .
