  1. Appendectomy General Surgical condition (Physiotherapy)

  2. Definition:- • Appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix.

  3. Indications:- • Acute appendicitis. • Recurrent appendicitis. • As interval appendectomy after drainage of abcess or in appendiceal mass. • Carcinoid tumor:- at the tip <2cm. • Mucocele of the appendix. • Appendicular graft; ileal conduit. • On table colonic levage.

  4. Types:- • Open. • Laparoscopies.

  5. Pre-operative Preparation:- • Investigation. • Urinalysis • Full blood count • Ultrasound Scan • Rehydrate patient with IV fluid; N/S. • Pass urethral catheter. • N-G tube. • IV antibiotics prophylaxis:- broad spectrum.

  6. Anaesthesia:- • General anaesthesia with endotracheal intubation and muscle relaxation.

  7. Position:- • Patient position is supine.

  8. Post-operative management:- • In uncomplicated case, oral fluid are started 12 hours after recovery followed by light diet 24 hours later. • In complicated, IV fluid, IV antibiotics and NPO with N-G tube drainage until bowel activity recommence and temperature subside. • Stiches removed in 7-10 days.

  9. Post-operative complication:- • Wound infecton • Intra abdominal abscess • Haemorrhage • Ileus • Generalised peritonitis • Respiratory infection • UTI

  10. (contd.) • Venous thrombosis and embolism • Portal pyaemia • Faecal fistula • Adhesive intestinal obstruction
