Development of Rice-Wheat (RW) System in Punjab • With the introduction of green revolution technologies and assured procurement at minimum support price, the area under rice has increased to 2.6 m ha. and under wheat to 3.4 m ha. • Food Grain production increased from 7.3 m MT in 1970 to 24.8 m MT in 2001-02. • From 1.5 % geographical area the state is producing 9% rice and 20% wheat of total production of the country

  3. OUR CONCERNS • Production has increased at a cost • Productivity is not increasing, • Quality of natural resource base is declining • Issue is: cut back cost of production, improve factor productivity and reverse the resource degradation process

  4. RCT: Zero-Tillage For Wheat Zero Tillage : Planting of crops with minimum soil disturbance ZT Planted wheat Slit for seed and fertilizer

Zero-Tillage : Astonishing Benefits • Saving of about Rs 2000/- per ha. in cost of diesel for land preparation where as yield per ha. is same or more than conventional tillage. • Saving in irrigation water requirement. (1000 m3 of water per ha. at field level) • Helps in timely planting of wheat. (Prevents yield losses due to late planting of wheat @ 35-40 kg/ha/day) • Retention of crop residues helps in improving soil organic matter, soil structure and microbial population Zero-Till, Residues retained Zero -Tilled wheat, mulched , betters early seedling vigor and controls weeds

  6. REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION : Lower emission of green house gases due to reducedburning of crop residues and fossil fuels

  15. Bed Planting: A Water-Wise Technology • Promotes crop diversification. • Obviates waterlogging stresses, in situ rainwater conservation. • Less lodging, bolder grain, larger panicle Normal Bed planting • Provide avenues for alternate sources • of productivity growth.

  16. REPLICATION IN RICE CROP ESTABLISHMENT THE SUCCESS OF ZT TECHNOLOGY IN WHEAT HAS RAISED THE HOPES FOR ITS ADOPTION IN RICE. EFFORTS IN FARMER PARTICIPATORY MODE SHALL BE MADE IN THE ENSUING KHARIF SEASON.

What is Needed? • Double Zero-till system must be developed • Suitable cultivars for new RCTs ( Zero-till and Bed-planting). • Technology for management of loose crop residues to avoid burning . Develop suitable machinery for residue management. • Development of suitable PACKAGE OF PRACTICES for new tillage technologies. • Research and Extension systems must work hand in hand to serve rice-wheat system ecology and its environment.

  19. THE WAY FORWARD PROMOTE RESOURCE CONSERVING TECHNOLOGIES AS STRATEGY TO SUSTAIN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY AND IMPROVE LIVELIHOODS IN RURAL AREAS .
