Higher expenditures to manage e-commerce supply chains, greater demands from suppliers to pass on raw- material cost inflation, higher investments to match new competitors, and continuously rising labour costs are all putting pressure on margins. Simultaneously, customer expectations are rising as digital natives and innovators alike increase the bar for customised service—often at the expense of a competitive pricing structure. As retailers struggle to adapt, if not survive, they are increasingly turning to technology to help them deal with shrinking margins and higher customer demands. For all but digital natives, however, automation is a new capability, and the sophistication of approach varies proportionately.

Despite the fact that these cost challenges are not new, many businesses have already exhausted typical cost-cutting options.
