  2. The Age of Reason • AKA “The Enlightenment” • Lasted from the mid-1600s until 1789 • Scientific discoveries • Math • RULES, LAWS

  3. The Literature • Non-fiction was King • Encyclopaedias, dictionaries, scientific journals, travelogues, biographies, etc • In poetry, there were VERY strict rules of rhyme and rhythm • In fiction, SATIRE was popular

  4. Satire Copy this definition of satire: Using ridicule, sarcasm or irony to draw attention to social issues

  5. “A Modest Proposal” • Jonathan Swift lived in Ireland in the early 1700s • He noticed that Catholics tended to be very poor and have a LOT of children • He circulated a pamphlet in which he offered a solution

  6. In the beginning… • Swift laments all of the beggars on the streets of Dublin • Children are a burden to their parents, and they are expensive • Is there any way they could be of benefit?

  8. In the end… • Swift shot down reasonable solutions, like making landlords responsible and taxing the rich • Some Dubliners thought the pamphlet was REAL, and wondered when they’d see babies the butcher’s window!
