What is a search engine? What is a search engine? 1 relevant: relevant: related to a particular subject A search engine is a program that looks for things on the internet. Any user (a person using a computer linked to the internet) can type words into a search engine. Where did the name Google come from? Where did the name Google come from? Google is the world’s most popular search engine. It was invented by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Google was named after a ‘googol’. This is the name for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. They were graduate students4 4 in computer science. Larry was a new student, and the university asked Sergey to show him around the campus5 5. This excited Larry and Sergey. They then began working on Google. They worked in their dorm rooms. The pair built a network6 6 using cheap, used, and borrowed computers. They needed a lot of computer power, which came in the form of disks. They spent all their money buying disks as cheaply as they could.
