  1. August 2, 2017 Knowing These Problems Can Help You Avoid Costly Air Conditioning Repair Hot days during the year can take their toll on heat-sensitive individuals. Fortunately, AC units can come to the rescue and bring in cool air whenever needed. Make sure to stay on top of your AC maintenance and avoid these common mistakes, so you can beat the heat and stay comfortable without breaking the bank. Page | 1

  2. Wrong Positioning It may seem like AC units work wherever they are placed. The truth is, they have to be placed in a certain location in order to work properly and efficiently. Your best option is to place the unit under a shaded area where there is minimal sunlight. Then, you can prevent the unit from breaking down prematurely because of excessive exposure from the sun’s heat. Typically, the place that gets the most shade during the day is the north side of your house. Take your time inspecting your property just to make sure, though. Not Using Ceiling Fans Since you have an AC unit, you may think it can bring in cool air and keep everyone comfortable on its own. Although it can do that, you’d be better off using ceiling fans in conjunction with your AC unit. Turning your ceiling fans on during the day helps your AC unit work more efficiently, as it doesn’t have to run constantly throughout the day. Cool air will circulate the room and you’ll be pleased with lower energy bills each month. If you don’t have ceiling fans in your house, consider setting up free-standing fans. They work just as well and help you give the AC unit a break periodically. Failing to Replace the Air Filter One of the most important parts to maintain your AC unit is the air filter. Its main role is to keep integral components, such as the blower and evaporator coil, clean. Failing to replace the filter when it’s appropriate causes these parts to get dirty and could lead to higher bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing dirty filters can lower your AC unit’s energy consumption by 5 to 10 percent. There’s an easy test to see if you need a new filter. If light can no longer pass through the surface, it will need to be replaced with a filter of the same size. There are many great filters you can replace the old one with. A high-efficiency filter may be appropriate if you want to save money or if you suffer from allergies. Or, it may be best to install a reusable filter so you don’t have to keep changing it out every time it gets dirty. Page | 2
