Cataract Any opacity of crystalline lens is called cataract
Causes of cataract • Senile • Cortical, Nuclear sclerosis, Posterior sub-capsular • Trauma Blunt, penetrating, radiation • Systemic diseases DM, HPT, Myotonic dystrophy, Atopic dermatitis • Secondary Cataract Drugs, Ocular disease (uveitis, glaucoma, high myopia, retinal dystrophies) • Congenital Cataract Birth trauma, TORCH, Maternal drugs, Galactosemia, Mannosidosis, Down’s syndrome
Congenital Cataracts • Occur in 3 in 10000 live births • 66% bilateral • In ½ cause can be found • Genetic mutation AD mode of transfer, metabolic disorders, intrauterine infections • 33% unilateral • Usually cause is not found and are sporadic
Congenital Cataracts Morphological classification • Nuclear • Lamellar • Blue dot • Membranous • Coronary • Oil droplet • Sutural • pyramidal • Ant / post polar
Symptoms • Gradual reduction of vision • Poor vision in sunlight • Difficulty in reading • Glare • Halos • Improvement in near vision
Signs • Eyes white and quiet • Cornea Transparent • AC Normal Shallow or Deep • Pupil RRR • Lens Opacity
Classification of cataract • Immature • Mature • Hyper-mature • Hyper-mature Morgagnian • Intumescent
Complication of cataract • Phaco-anaphylectic uveitis • Phaco-morphic glaucoma • Phaco-lytic glaucoma • Subluxation • luxation
