Transylvania is super infamous as the home of the ill-famed Dracula. However, what many don't know is Transylvania offers a plethora of different attractions and is one of the top locations for tourists and vacationers. If you are interested to take your first trip here, you need to draw up an itinerary and mark all the places you must visit and all the things you should do so that nothing is left behind. Read on to find out the main tourist destinations and what are the best activities that you should engage in while you are in Transylvania. • Biserica Neagra: Biserica Neagra or the black church is one of the best destinations here that tops the list. This magnanimous building overlooks the council square or the Piata Sfatului as well as Brasov Old Town. The Black Church incidentally is the biggest gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul that dates back to the later half of the 14th century. Black Church draws its name from the unfortunate 1689 Great Fire that substantially damaged the structure and a large portion of the surrounding town.
Cheile Turzii: Any Transylvania travel guide will definitely include the limestone cliff of Cheile Turzii or the Turda Gorge. The cliffs lie on either side of the 3-kilometer-long canyon and cover almost 1.8 miles. This protected area that also exhibits karst formations has been formed over a long period due to the erosion caused by the river moving between the limestone ridges. • Poarta Ecaterinei: Constructed in 1559, Catherine’s Gate, or what is locally known as Poarta Ecaterinei si one of the last standing structures that bears proof of medieval architecture. The Saxons used this as a storage unit during the 1800s and 1900s and the Gate stands as a solid proof of Romania’s culture, heritage, and history. • Bran’s Castle or the Castle of Dracula: Every single private tour guide in Romania will agree that Dracula’s Castle is one of those locations that draw throngs of interested crowds year after year. Whether Count Dracula lived there or not will always remain a mystery.
However, no one can ignore the palatial structure that stands at the very top of a 61 meters high cliff, overlooking the city. Later on, the castle was turned into a museum dedicated to honoring Queen Marie of Romania. • Lacul Balea: Your tour of Romania remains incomplete if you do not bathe in the beauty of Lake Balea which sits at a height of 2000 meters, atop the Fargas mountains. The breathtaking view is what attracts tourists every year. The water though is not great for swimming as it stays quite cold even during the day owing to the topography.
