    1. Brighter and Better Concrete White Cement and Concrete Whiteners ACI Committee 124 – Concrete Aesthetics ACI National Convention, March 16, 2004 Michael Chusid, RA, FCSI

    3. Portland Cement yields a Range of Concrete Shades...

    4. …Including White.

    5. A Heritage of White Concrete Bahai Temple Designed 1912, Completed 1951 Wilmette, IL

    6. The Tradition Continues Auditorio de Tenerife Completed 2003, Canary Islands

    7. The Tradition Continues Dives in Misericordia Completed 2003, Rome

    9. More Colorful Colors Adding MetaMax lightens the cementitious mixture (top), producing brighter concrete and more vibrant colors. Adding MetaMax lightens the cementitious mixture (top), producing brighter concrete and more vibrant colors.

    10. Concrete has Become a Fashionable Finish

    11. Higher Albedo Reduces Solar Heat Gain

    12. Improved Lighting Efficiency

    13. Better Visibility for Improved Safety

    14. Avoid Life-Cycle Cost & Environmental Impact of Coating

    15. White Portland Cement and Select Aggregates

    16. Concrete Whiteners Titanium Dioxide Pigment Whiten/Brighten Concrete White Supplementary Cementitious Materials and Pozzolans Whiten/Brighten Concrete Improve Strength and Durability Modify Workability

    17. Concrete Is Formed By A Chemical Reaction Portland cement hydration produces Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) + Lime. CSH is the “glue”, the cementitious compound, that holds concrete together.

    18. Lime Is Not Beneficial To Concrete Lime does not bind with concrete. Lime contributes to problems such as: Efflorescence. Porosity. Alkali Silica Reaction Deterioration.

    19. Positively Pozzolanic Pozzolans converts free lime into additional CSH, improving concrete strength, density, and durability.

    20. High Reactivity Metakaolin (HRM) is a Bright White Pozzolan Most pozzolans are dark or industrial byproducts not controlled for color consistency. High Reactivity Metakaolin (HRM) has “Hunter L” whiteness > 90 (100 is maximum) and is manufactured for color uniformity.

    21. What is High Reactivity Metakaolin?

    22. Visual Impact of High Reactivity Metakaolin

    23. Higher Early and Ultimate Strength

    24. Reduce Chloride Ion Penetration to Improve Durability

    25. Control Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) Most glass (silica) is reactive in concrete. Adding HRM enables glass to be used as aggregate. Thousands of tons of glass can now be recycled annually.

    26. HRM Controls Efflorescence

    27. Improve Workability and Reduce Mottling

    28. CASE STUDY – Museum of Modern Art Boutique “HRM made the concrete creamier and more consistent so we could create an ultra smooth surface without flow lines or objectionable blemishes.” Alan Bouknight Azzarone Contracting Corp. Mineola, NY

    29. CASE STUDY – Museum of Modern Art Boutique “Using white portland cement and metakaolin, we can produce beautiful opalescent finishes and get just the shade we need.” Alan Bouknight Azzarone Contracting Corp., Mineola, NY

    30. CASE STUDY – Shepard Hall, City College of New York “Metakaolin produced an extremely dense architectural surface that was much less affected by the kinds of environmental attacks we expect in today’s world.” Carl Stein, FAIA Stein White Nelligan Architects, LLC New York, NY

    31. CASE STUDY – Shepard Hall, City College of New York “Traditional GFRC mixtures aren’t very consistent, and you tend to get gaps at small details. Metakaolin, however, improves the workability of the concrete.” Mike McCloud MJM Studios of NY, Inc.

    32. Concrete Sculpture and Jewelry No project is too small…

    33. Proposed Fehmarn Bridge from Denmark to Germany …or too big.
